Roundtable on the Status of 2SLGBTQIA+ Human Rights Ottawa

On July 16, 2025, Pride at Work Canada / Fierté au travail Canada co-hosted a roundtable in Ottawa with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Canada. The goal: to explore how our two countries can learn from each other in advancing the human rights and economic inclusion of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

We were joined by leaders from across sectors—civil society, government, and private industry—each bringing unique perspectives and lived experiences. The conversation moved between national policy, local realities, and everyday workplace practices. Together, we explored what it means to embed inclusion into economic systems, not just as a value, but as a strategy for justice.

There were moments of honesty and urgency. We talked about the limits of visibility alone, the impact of disinformation on public opinion, and the danger of treating equity as a communications exercise rather than a structural commitment. Several voices emphasized the need to move beyond defending rights and start proactively reshaping systems—especially when it comes to the inclusion of trans and gender-diverse people.

After the roundtable, we welcomed a broader group of community members, advocates, and professionals for a small reception. It was an opportunity to keep the conversation going—informally, openly, and across different lived and professional experiences. We’ve since heard from several attendees who shared how meaningful it was to have space for both policy dialogue and personal connection.

We’re grateful to the Embassy and to Gowling WLG for helping create the conditions for this dialogue, and to everyone who joined us to listen, speak, and build together.
