Commitment to Diversity
Gowling WLG is a people-focused business committed to giving everyone the opportunity to succeed, develop personally and professionally, and contribute in a meaningful way.We recognize that our different backgrounds, strengths and perspectives make our firm stronger. Our teams and our workplaces are built upon that understanding, reflecting the diversity of the clients we serve and the communities in which we work.
Our diversity, equity and inclusion work – which encompasses education, equitable retention and advancement initiatives, community engagement, and thoughtful partnerships – is built upon four pillars:
- Anti-oppressive approach: We LISTEN to firm members from marginalized communities about their experiences of barriers and discrimination within the Firm, and ACT to eliminate those barriers.
- Truth and reconciliation: We work to LEARN the truth about Indigenous lives, communities and experiences, to UNLEARN the harmful inaccuracies, and to INCREASE EQUITY and ELIMINATE BARRIERS that are unique to Indigenous peoples.
- Community development: We EMPOWER individuals and groups of people across the Firm with the skills they need to effect change within their spheres of influence.
- Appreciative inquiry: We identify what is working well, analyzing why it is working well and do more of it. We act on the principle that WHAT WE MEASURE, WE CAN CHANGE.
Our community partnerships include:
- Pride at Work Canada
- Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD)
- Sponsors of the CALL/ACAL (Canadian Association of LGBTQS+ Lawyers) PRISME national conference
