Inclusion Toolkit for Workplaces

Home / Empowering 2SLGBTQIA+ Workers in Energy / Inclusion Toolkit for Workplaces

2SLGBTQIA+ workers in energy and other industries (like construction, mining, logistics, manufacturing, etc.) often navigate workplace cultures, policies, reporting systems, and facilities that were not designed with their realities in mind. Small changes in practice can make a significant difference to safety, retention, participation, and trust.

The Inclusion Toolkit is a practical set of tools designed to help employers, site leaders, HR professionals, DEI practitioners, and employees strengthen safety, dignity, and inclusion for 2SLGBTQIA+ workers in the energy sector.

The toolkit offers clear, actionable resources that organizations can use to identify gaps, guide conversations, improve policies, and support implementation across worksites and teams.

Who this toolkit is for

This toolkit is designed for:

  • Employers in the energy sector
  • Site and operations leaders
  • HR and DEI teams
  • Health and safety professionals
  • Union representatives
  • ERGs and workplace champions
  • 2SLGBTQIA+ workers and allies
Focus on jobsites

The toolkit focuses especially on field-based, remote, and jobsite contexts, where workplace culture, facilities, reporting systems, and day-to-day practices can have a major impact on whether workers feel safe, respected, and able to do their jobs well.

What’s included

1. Checklist for 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusion on Jobsites
A structured checklist to help organizations, site managers, and HR and DEI professionals assess current practices and take action on governance, safety and reporting, facilities, training, recruitment, and worker support.

2. Toolbox Talk Guides
Two short guides designed for weekly team briefings and toolbox talks:

  • Respect = Safety, which frames harassment and identity-based disrespect as workplace safety issues
  • Inclusive Facilities, which helps teams discuss washroom access, privacy, and facility standards in practical terms

3. Field & Jobsite Inclusive Washroom Guide
A guide to minimum standards, best practices, and implementation steps for creating inclusive washrooms and related facilities that support dignity, accessibility, safety, and compliance. It also includes ready-to-use washroom signage posters.

4. Checklist for Harassment & Discrimination Policy
A checklist to support the development or review of workplace policies and processes so they better prevent and respond to homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia in both office and field-based settings.

5. Checklist for Establishing an ERG on the Jobsite
A practical guide for building an ERG that is properly supported, well-resourced, and meaningful for employees working in field-based environments

How to use the toolkit

The toolkit is designed to be flexible. Organizations can use the full set as part of a broader inclusion strategy, or start with the tools most relevant to their current needs, whether that means reviewing policies, improving facilities, supporting site-level conversations, or creating stronger structures for employee support and accountability.
