Posting Description

The Transport Associate (TA) is an RN or RRT who applies advanced intensive care knowledge, skills, and experience as part of a mobile intensive care unit (ICU) service at SickKids, within the Acute Care Transport Service (ACTS) team. The ACTS Transport Associate provides specialized care to critically ill neonates and children from 0-18 years of age. Working collaboratively and under the direction of a Transport Clinician (RN or RRT) and/or Transport Physician, the TA responds by land or air ambulance to referring hospitals within Ontario and across Canada to stabilize patients and ensure their safe transport to definitive care.

This highly specialized role offers exposure to a wide range of complex clinical scenarios, including attendance at highrisk deliveries and the transport of neonatal and paediatric patients requiring emergent, intensive, or quaternary level care. Transport assignments may include long distance and international travel, supporting patients referred to SickKids for highly specialized services.

Here's what you'll get to do

The program emphasizes interprofessional cross training between RNs and RRTs, supporting the development of shared competencies and collaborative practice. You will gain specialized training and hands-on experience caring for critically ill patients outside the hospital environment, providing care during both land and air transport in dynamic and often high-acuity settings.

In addition, you will:

  • Deliver family centered, patient-focused care within the scope of transport practice
  • Practice in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment, while progressively developing expertise in neonatal and paediatric transport medicine
  • Work collaboratively with the Transport Clinician to prioritize and deliver patient care in acute and critical situations
  • Contribute to and support internal education and outreach initiatives
  • Develop and strengthen leadership competencies within the specialized field of transport medicine
  • Contribute to and support research utilization, promotion and dissemination of new knowledge

Here's what you'll need

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse or with the College of Respiratory Therapy of Ontario (CRTO) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or related degree preferred, or demonstrate progress towards completion of a related university degree
  • Minimum three (3) years of clinical experience in a tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) or pediatric Emergency Department (ED) preferred
  • Ability to complete the ACTS Transport Associate Education Program within a defined and predetermined time frame
  • Completion of NRP and PALS certification preferred
  • A valid passport, required to support occasional international transport
