Course Description
This course is open to students volunteering as university orientation representatives in the current academic year of study. Student volunteer positions include those related to university transition (welcome week activities), and housing (residence) leadership roles. Through a variety of group activities, students will develop and reflect on their personal leadership, mentorship, and communication skills to better understand group dynamics, the leadership and communication style of others, the impact of orientation programming on the university experience, student development and critical considerations of the strategic priorities of orientation.
Required Qualifications
The successful applicant will have previous experience teaching courses of this nature, or similar courses, at the university level and/or appropriate academic qualifications.
The successful applicant will have an understanding of socially responsible leadership / the social change model of leadership, and the impacts of mentorship on post-secondary students.
The successful applicant will have an understanding of the complex and interconnecting nature of McMaster's orientation programs including Welcome Week and Residence Life.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in highly interactive teaching methods and providing meaningful feedback on student reflections is preferred.
A graduate degree in a related field is desired, preferably with a specialization in higher education, student affairs, or equivalent.
*Supplemented Fees - 15.02(a) The employee may be eligible to receive supplemented fees in accordance with Schedule C of the Collective Agreement. The actual rate of pay when in excess of the base rate of pay is deemed to include any supplemented fees owing, t the extent of the excess amount. If the actual rate of pay is less than the sum of the base rate of pay and the supplemented fees owing, then the employee shall receive the difference.
