Job Description

What is the opportunity?

The Insurance Technologies team manages a diverse set of applications using various distributed (Windows) and mainframe technologies. The team maintains multiple solutions delivering such Insurance functionality as Illustrations, Quoting, New Business, Underwriting, Policy Administration, Claims Administration and Compensation for the Life and Health business in RBC Insurance. This key position will support the maintenance and development of the existing applications within this diverse portfolio in support of business growth and an evolving regulatory environment.

What will you do?

  • Technical Analysis, Design, Coding and Consulting
  • Providing application-specific development expertise, leading analysis and detailed design phases, coding, code reviewing, testing support, tracking, escalating and/or resolving technical issues.
  • Contributes to successful project completion within budget and on time by identifying risks and developing/recommending mitigation strategies
  • Works in partnership with vendors to ensure deliverables are executed efficiently and conform to RBC standards.
  • Test Planning & Execution
  • Production Support (office hours and rotational on call)
  • Troubleshoot production issues, determine and address root causes
  • Utilize SRE tools to monitor applications' health status and triage issues
  • Manage application changes: review and apply code packages, perform post implementation verifications
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process automation and improvement
  • Development & Coaching of junior staff

Must-have:

  • Windows application development experience
  • Advanced experience using different development methodologies (eg. waterfall, agile)
  • Good knowledge of current infrastructure and technology platforms (Windows, internet and mainframe)
  • Expert in the use of current development tools such as Microsoft .NET, Github, MS SQL etc.
  • Innate ability to take ownership and accountability for troubleshooting production issues, determining root causes and engaging proactively in applying long-term solutions
  • Creating and maintaining solution and process documentation
  • Rotational on-call support

Nice-to-have:

  • Mainframe development experience with a particular focus on TSO/JCL
  • Good knowledge of IT Standards, Methodologies (eg. ITIL),
  • Exposure to DevOps and SRE (Jenkins, JFrog, UrbanCodeDeploy, Elasticsearch, etc.)
  • Deployment automation
  • Experience with scripting languages for automation (eg. PowerShell, Batch)
  • Experience working with external vendors/contractors
  • Insurance industry experience
