The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Geologist to join our Totten Mine team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position covered under the Collective Agreement between Vale and the Local 2020-05 United Steelworkers.
The Senior Geologist will provide geological support for the Mid-Range and execution team at Totten mine, with primary focus definition drilling, drill hole planning and drafting of drill letters, forecasting monthly drilling rates, creating rolling 5-year definition budget, and core logging. Work closely with Engineering, Ground Control and Operations to support the mine designs for the Life of Mine Plan, drilling requirements and moves, and with the In-Mines exploration and central Geology teams to support Totten's exploration planning.
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Follow departmental safety program.
- Support Definition Drilling Geology functions at site, with collaboration with the Engineering department and Operations.
- Diamond drill hole planning and drill letter creation, daily progress tracking and month end reporting.
- Creation of the 5-year Definition Drilling plan to support the Life of Mine Plan. Coordinate with the In-Mines Exploration team to generate exploration targets and create a drilling schedule to accommodate all drilling requirements.
- Mentor and train core logging Geologists in all aspects of geological data collection and sampling.
- Core logging, sampling, and QAQC.
- Compile and review geological data to create or update and document geological models and mineral resource estimates.
- This work includes assessing risk, seeking opportunities and completing mineral resource estimates in compliance with company and legislated resource and reserve reporting standards, including NI 43-101, CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves, TSE Disclosure Standards, Project Delivery System (PDS), and MTS guidelines.
- Support Scoping, Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility studies for various ore bodies & projects for Totten Mine.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to facilitate integration of mineral resources and mine designs into geological database applications in order to support grade control practices and Mineral Reserve and Mineral Resource reporting.
- Work in the Geology department with the Totten Mine team to provide geological input and support to the Life of Mine Planning (LoMP) process on an ongoing basis.
- Carry out specific accountabilities as assigned by the Chief Mine Geologist.
- Identify, analyze and recommend opportunities for safety, productivity and cost improvements.
- Periodic underground travel is required.
About You
Education:
- The successful candidate will possess at a minimum B.Sc Geology or B.Sc Geological Engineering.
- Registration as a Professional Geoscientist with PGO (Professional Geoscientists of Ontario) is required.
Experience:
- The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five years of progressive relevant experience in an underground mining environment.
Skills:
- Advanced understanding and knowledge of Vale Ontario Operations Geological Systems including: MEBS (Mines Exploration Bore Hole System), MRM (Mineral Resource Management database and reporting system including Mineability and Dilution), AMGC (All Mines Grade Control), Diamond Drill Hole Layouts.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook
- Demonstrated competency in Datamine StudioRM
- Ability to visualize and interpret 3D geological data for modelling and grade interpolation
- Knowledge of Vale MTS geological guidelines and standards.
- Knowledge of Mining, Milling and Refining Processes.
