Job Summary

The research assistant will participate in a variety of clinical research studies in the Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit at the BC Children s Hospital. The research studies are related to Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Endocrinology, and ancillary studies in mental health. The research assistant will perform data collection from patients, data entry, and recruitment of study subjects.

Organizational Status
The research assistant will be directly supervised by the Principle Investigator(s) and will work closely with the pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes physicians as well as the Division s team of health professionals, research staff, and support staff.

Work Performed
Assist with the conduct of clinical research in an academic setting. Activities to which the research assistant may be exposed include the following:

  • Patient screening

  • Recruitment and follow-up

  • Data collection and data entry

  • Scheduling subject visits

  • Maintaining and organizing records and files for studies

  • Performs other related duties as required


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Assistant is required to conduct the research activities in an ethical manner. Study data must be reliably and accurately recorded. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered too. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigator, the Department Head, and the Research Assistant s governing professional organization.

Supervision Received
This position reports to the Principle Investigator. Data entry and patient tracking for follow-up will be done independently.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion


Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree related to medicine Biology, Biochemistry, Psychology etc. preferred. Excellent oral and written English language skills; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Good computer skills with basic programs including excel. Reliability and ability to exercise initiative and independence, Ability to follow and carry out written and verbal instructions. Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and to exercise tact, discretion, and confidentiality. Knowledge of medical terminology and previous experience in clinical research would be an asset. Enthusiastic about working with children, families, and medical staff.
