Who we are
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a talented and driven individual to join the Reliability Tools Evolution team as a Power System Engineer. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on the leading edge of the power sector, collaborating with teams across the IESO to help plan and implement the next generation of toolsets supporting real-time operations – ensuring safe, reliable, and cost effective operation of Ontario’s power grid.
This is a promotion-in-place (PIP) affected role, candidates with lesser qualifications would be considered for a Power System Engineer-in-Training role.
What you'll be doing
Key initiatives you will have an opportunity to contribute towards include:
- Implementing a Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS), that leverages Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data for use in validating system models and for enhancing real-time situational awareness. This includes implementing an effective training program to equip teams with necessary skills to effectively utilize WAMS and PMU data.
- Planning and conceptualizing our next generation Energy Management System (EMS), including collaborating with diverse teams to assess current EMS capabilities and opportunities for enhancement, and ensuring alignment with evolving industry standards and technological advancements.
- Helping to operationalize real-time grid stability assessments, including utilizing advanced analytics and modeling techniques to proactively identify and validate potential risks to system reliability.
- Developing solutions to provide operations staff with improved access to critical information when and where they need it, such as a new real-time business rules engine, and/or real-time data analytics and visualization tools.
- Leading or contributing to other special projects or initiatives aimed at enhancing toolsets, refining processes, or addressing specific operational challenges.
