Posting Description
The Medical Interpreter, Arabic, facilitates verbal communication by conveying, as faithfully as possible, messages transmitted between Health Care Providers (HCP) and limited English-speaking patients/families (LEPs) who speak Arabic with the focus on the transmittal of medical information for direct patient care. The Medical Interpreter will be involved in a variety of complex patient care situations and will work with patients, families, and inter-professional health care teams.
Here's What You'll Get to Do
Responsibilities to Patients/Families and Hospital Staff/Healthcare Providers
· Abide by Code of Ethics as established by the National Standards Guide for Community Interpreting Services
· Explain the role of the interpreter by properly introducing yourself
· Protect patient health information and confidentiality
· Refrain from imposing own values and opinions
· Maintain professional and ethical conduct at all time
· Refrain from mediating, advocating, giving advice or expressing opinions
· Refer patients/family members who have questions to the appropriate healthcare professional
· Provide interpretation in the following situations: pre-operative explanations, obtaining informed consent, post-operative discussions and instructions, discharge planning and specialized teaching (e.g., Diabetic, Transplant, Pharmacy and Dietetic teaching)
· Provide sight translation of documents for direct patient care discharge summary, medication instructions, and post-operative care
· Provide virtual interpretation related to direct patient care
Responsibilities to the Interpreter Services Department
· Follow the policies and procedures established by Interpreter Services, the Hospital Code of Conduct and applicable PHIPA regulations
· Work collaboratively with a large and diverse inter-professional health care team.
· Assume responsibility for all aspects of Medical Interpreter practice including accountability for standards of practice, ethical conduct and role responsibility.
· Participate in departmental team meetings
· Assume responsibility for departmental projects as required
· Make on-going efforts to educate Hospital staff in how to work effectively with interpreters
· Raise awareness among SickKids staff of the need for interpretation services as a resource to NELPs
Here's What You'll Need
· English proficiency assessment for non-native English Speaker (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL or college language assessment)
· Post-secondary credentials or equivalent
· Language Interpreter Skills Assessment Test (e.g. CILISAT, ILSAT)
· Post-Secondary Training in interpreting: Successful completion of the Language Interpreting Training Program (LITP) (College Certificate), Curriculum of minimum 180 hours or Glendon Graduate Diploma in General Interpreting (GDGI)
· Membership in a professional association of interpreters is preferred e.g. APLI, ATIO, OCCI
· Medical terminology Certification
· Documented medical interpreting experience both virtual and in-person
· French or other language proficiency (tested and trained) along with Arabic preferred
· Experience providing interpretation services in a paediatric hospital setting is preferred
· Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills
· Proficiency in the use of electronic platforms such as Microsoft 365, and other relevant hospital technology
· Delivery of services: In-person and virtual platforms
· Understand importance and demonstrates ability to foster a culture of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
· Flexible availability to work various hours, including possible weekend and evening appointments
