Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for an intermediate to senior Wildlife Biologist to support our terrestrial wildlife programs and grow our ecosystems team in Saskatchewan. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and leading wildlife related tasks and deliverables for projects in a variety of sectors (e.g., mining, oil and gas, power generation) across Western Canada and the Territories. Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading the wildlife component of projects, such as designing and leading wildlife field programs, preparing components of environmental assessments, writing wildlife management and monitoring plans, and supporting wildlife-related environmental permitting activities for a variety of projects.

The position can be based in one of our Saskatchewan offices (Regina or Saskatoon) or in our Manitoba office in Winnipeg.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead assignments or projects related to terrestrial wildlife that require critical thinking and mature technical knowledge
  • Lead the development and implementation of assignments/projects, independently or as part of team, that have broad scope or are complex in nature
  • Develop, manage, and implement terrestrial wildlife components of projects, such as biophysical inventories, environmental assessments, management and monitoring plans, and mitigation plans
  • Technical writing and report preparation
  • Provide technical advice to clients relating to terrestrial wildlife and provincial and/or federal wildlife regulations on multidisciplinary projects
  • Coordinate and track assignments, scopes, schedules, budgets, and deliverables and manage tasks according to approved scopes of work
  • Effectively communicate with clients and project management teams
  • Assist with proposal writing and business development, including limited travel for project work and business development opportunities
  • Provide technical direction and support to junior staff
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Experience preparing and coordinating environmental assessments, impact statements, mitigation and management plans and other regulatory applications
  • Ability to develop and manage field programs for terrestrial wildlife
  • Strong knowledge of provincial (Saskatchewan) and federal environmental legislation and regulations that relate to terrestrial wildlife
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of audiences/ technical backgrounds including internal and external clients, regulatory agencies, and Indigenous groups
  • Experience in leading field crews in execution of wildlife surveys for birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and species at risk, following standardized species detection survey protocols
  • An understanding of project development and management. Previous project management experience is an asset
  • Experience supervising people and/or leading teams is an asset

Education and Experience

Bachelor or graduate degree in biology, or a related discipline from a recognized university.

Registration as a Registered Professional Biologist considered an asset.

Minimum of 8 years of relevant consulting experience, including previous experience managing wildlife programs.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather as well as travel to remote communities.

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
