What is the opportunity?
As the Director, Risk and Controls Management, you will lead the oversight and delivery of the organizational risk and control framework activities within Transformation and Enterprise Operations (TEO). You will deliver a robust TEO risk strategy and governance framework approach, that balances risk discipline with operational agility. You’ll partner closely with senior leaders across Operations, Risk, Compliance, and Technology to drive continuous improvement in risk identification, control effectiveness, and issue management processes to protect the integrity of our day-to-day operations.
In this role you will be central to ensuring that operational processes are executed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulatory standards. You will drive a proactive risk culture, strengthen internal controls, and act as a trusted advisor to partners and senior executives on risk-related matters impacting day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives.
Beyond managing issues, controls and risk reporting, this is a high-impact leadership role, where you’ll influence strategic decisions, promote a culture of accountability, and embed risk awareness into TEO’s DNA. You’ll lead a fast-paced and dynamic team, in Operations Process Engineering (OPE), that acts as both a “control guardian” and a proactive enabler of business transformation—ensuring operational resilience as TEO continues to innovate and scale for the future.
The ideal candidate is a highly experienced risk leader, and trusted partner, who will collaborate with senior leadership, governance and data partners across the organization, to deliver on risk transformation programs which will deliver innovation through the adoption of digital, data and AI/GenAI solutions
What will you do?
- Lead the design and execution of the TEO risk and control management Strategy and Operating Model, translating complex risk concepts into clear, actionable strategies, reporting and routines that drive sustainable business results.
- Build and manage a team of risk professionals focused on control testing, issue management, and root cause analysis.
- Partner with Operations, Compliance, and Internal Audit to identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor operational risks and risk events across end-to-end processes. Support and govern TEO Audits in partnership with audit and operations partners.
- Oversee the ongoing maintenance and effectiveness of TEO key control inventory and framework activities (i.e., RCSA). Execute Business Environment Impact Assessments and Risk Evaluations, mapping controls within Risk Register
- Guide control assessment and assurance activities, ensuring timely remediation of findings and strong governance practices.
- Drive implementation of technology, AI and automation tools to enhance control monitoring, risk analytics, and reporting capabilities. Lead and implement the 80% risk reduction Roadmap, with identified projects, automated solutions and control enhancements. Track progress to delivery.
- Develop and maintain risk dashboards and key risk indicators (KRIs) for senior management and governance committees.
- Deliver risk advisory and consulting, within our OPE Process re-engineering, AI and Automation programs. Support our transformation programs and businesses on IRPs, DRAs, PRAs, SRMAs and control design.
- Design and run the monthly TEO Executive and Team Risk Forums, planning and facilitating strategic discussions and relevant risk topics for greater risk awareness, best practices and issue attention.
- Provide thought leadership in strengthening risk culture, promoting accountability, and embedding risk awareness into day-to-day operations. Develop and deliver the Risk training programs for teams and executives.
- Support the process optimization, process lifecycle management and process practice management activities with risk leadership, governance and controls inventory and design activities.
- Represent Operations Process Engineering in major TEO and enterprise process governance and strategy initiatives. Council senior operations and technology leadership on transformation and process initiatives impacting Operations. Develop strong working relationships with Operations partners.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have:
- Demonstrated experience in risk management, internal controls, or audit within banking or financial services operations.
- Strong knowledge of operational risk frameworks, regulatory expectations, and banking industry standards. Demonstrated success leading control frameworks and risk governance activities at a senior level.
- Strong understanding of control design, testing, and remediation processes.
- Demonstrated experience in strategy development and translating strategy into action, including translating into initiatives and OKRs, building strategic roadmaps, aligning on governance and anchoring with stakeholders.
- Familiarity with process reengineering, operational resilience, and third-party risk management.
- Experience fostering risk awareness and training programs for large operational teams.
- Ability to impact, influence and negotiate with key stakeholders in building a superior solution, and ultimately a strong client or stakeholder experience.
- A strong technical ability with PowerPoint, Word and Excel
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with risk data analytics, control automation, or integrated GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) platforms. Keen interest in technology and integrating intelligent Automation, AI/ML-driven tools as enablers to risk operations.
- Bachelor’s degree in data, risk management, Finance, Technology, Business, or a related field, or recognized risk-related certifications (e.g., FRM, CRMA, CPA, CIA). Master’s degree or MBA is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience in process engineering, process design, process optimization, process lifecycle management, process governance, operations management or continuous improvement programs.
- Background in leading or supporting regulatory exams, audits, and risk assurance activities.
- Experience with financial services processes such as banking operations, transaction processing, regulatory compliance, risk management, and client servicing.
- Demonstrated experience leading large transformation initiatives and driving measurable improvements.
- Strong analytical and Data skills to support the analysis of opportunities and to understand the full impacts of end-to-end controls management in business processes.
- A strong understanding of Payments, Trade, Cash, Commercial Banking or Finance Shared Services.
- Understanding of emerging digital, data and AI technologies
