The Accessibility Navigator assess inquiries from applicants and students regarding Accessible Learning Services, assisting in completing intake requirements, scheduling appointments, and conducting outreach to students to facilitate appointments.

The Accessibility Navigator provides student check-in and referral for students who present with high accommodation needs, supports the Accessibility Support Officers with arranging accommodation supports, and assists external providers to navigate access to college meeting rooms and classrooms when providing accommodation support to students.

The Accessibility Navigator assists with record-keeping requirements. This involves helping to ensure Accessible Learning Services meets Ministry data collection requirements.

The Accessibility Navigator processes confidential student documentation. The incumbent must have a full understanding of FIPA and PHIPPA legislation, OHRC policy on the duty to accommodate persons with disabilities, along with a full understanding of the student record-keeping system used in Accessible Learning Services.

What you’ll be doing:

Accessibility Navigation & Front Desk Coverage

  • Taking the lead role with new ALS student intake which involves meeting with new intakes, supporting completion of intake forms in Accommodate, gathering documentation, and arranging ALS appointments through the Accommodate portal.
  • Provides coverage for phone calls to the Accessible Learning Services phone line and email.
  • Meeting with students to offer check-in appointments using a structured interview and referral process.
  • Provides support to the Accessibility Support Officer with the arrangement of accommodations such as peer supports, ergonomic furniture, emailing Accommodation Letters, and making requests for disability documentation from school boards and other academic institutions.
  • Student and department outreach, including following up with students who miss appointments, outreach to students registered with ALS to check in on progress and offer services, and representing ALS at internal Mohawk and external promotional events.
  • Follows up with students who miss appointments and assists with rebooking.

Accessibility Department Support

  • Responsible for the scanning of accessibility intake and consent forms, and any other clinical documentation into Accommodate.
  • Engages in internal and external promotion of departmental services and programs.
  • Processes requests for information/documentation from student files and prepares letters in draft for Manager’s signature to release the contents of student files to approved individuals.
  • Monitors generic email accounts for accessibility, including providing referrals to internal college and community resources, answering service-related questions and front-line response to complaints and concerns.
  • Assists ALS with Accommodate data and document processing requirements, helping to ensure that all appropriate student information is in Accommodate and processing financial assistance documents.

ALS Front Desk

  • Provides back up to the ALS Front Desk Support for the Student Triage Support Officer.
  • Provides back up for appointment and meeting scheduling and preparation of the ALS schedule prior to each semester.

Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  •  3-year diploma/degree in Social Work, Human Services, Community Services, Rehabilitation Services, or Education.
  • A minimum of three years of practical experience, in a service-oriented environment within an educational setting; primarily related to supporting applicants, students and staff.
  • Safe Talk, Mental Health First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention Course would be an asset.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities to facilitate their academic social and career development which includes training in AODA, OHRC Policy.
  • Experience providing client services programs, advocacy, coaching, and problem solving.
  • Experience with current computer software (e.g., MS office) and data management systems, including generating reports, performing data queries, maintaining databases (e.g., spreadsheets).
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
