Alternative Project Delivery (APD) encompasses all non-Design-Bid-Build contract models for capital works delivery including both collaborative and non-collaborative approaches. These models include Construction Management at Risk (CMAR), Progressive Design Build (PDB), Design Build (DB), Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) or Alliance. Variations of DB and PDB models include Finance and Operate and Maintain components: (P)DBF, (P)DBFOM, depending on the contracting parties. Stantec intends to hold only the design or owner’s advisor (OA) roles.

The interest in APD in Western Canada has grown substantially in the last number of years. Due to market conditions, the size and volume of projects to be delivered in Canada West, our clients have increasingly turned to APD to deliver their Water projects. The Alternative Project Delivery Leader (APDL) role for Western Canada was created to recognize and respond to the rapidly growing adoption of alternative project delivery for Water projects in this geography. This growth represents both opportunity and risk for our business.

Key objectives for the Canada West APDL are to:

  • Support the responsible growth of our APD business in Canada West
  • Mitigate our risk by advancing our ability to effectively deliver quality projects and proposals.

As this is a new role, the APDL is expected to develop a 3 year plan with the objective of accelerating and integrating APD projects into our project portfolio in Canada West Water.

Responsibilities

Grow our APD Business

  • Identify and support the win of APD pursuits in collaboration with local Business Centre Leadership, Regional Leaders, Account Managers, and business developers by: - Participating in positioning work
  • Identifying and developing suitable APD partner relationships(and contracts), primarily building off existing Stantec relationships
  • Tracking and contributing to contract review
  • Identifying project risks and prepare and mentor pursuit team for senior leadership risk review processes as required
  • Supporting bid development through document development, responsibility matrices, pricing strategies, interviews, delivery/resourcing approach, etc.
  • Monitor Pipeline for APD tags on new opportunities
  • Strategy – Assist Regional Growth Leader in identifying and prioritizing key clients/contractors and growth opportunities
  • Develop and maintain awareness of: - Contract models and which Canada West clients are using them
  • Stantec’s relationships with contractors operating in Canada West, particularly with skills to deliver Water projects
  • Competitor’s capabilities in the APD space in Canada West Water
  • Act as a resource for teams pursuing APD Water Work in Canada West including supporting risk threshold approvals for APD pursuits; understand the contract model risks and identify means to mitigate them
  • Develop people who understand APD and can help pursue APD projects.
  • Reinforcing our brand as a leader in delivery of Water projects using APD contract models with clients and contractors.
  • Collaborate with Canada East APDL for cross region opportunities

Advance our APD Project Execution

  • Liaise with professionals with APD experience across the company (including other business lines) to bring best practices to Canada West Water
  • Develop knowledge of external resources to support delivery of Water projects including Integrated Project Delivery Alliance (IPDA), Water Collaborative Delivery Association (WCDA), Lean IPD, Design Build Institute of America (DBIA), and Canadian Construction Association (CCA)
  • Contribute to training and development of Canada West teams in APD execution
  • Represent Canada West on the APD Executive Oversight Committee
  • Work collaboratively with Team Leads and Engineering Discipline Leads to: - Identify teams capable of operating effectively under APD contract models (CMAR, PDB, DB, IPD/Alliance)
  • Build capacity of our teams to deliver using APD models through training, mentoring, and tool sharing in collaboration with other Regions and business lines.
  • Identify how to effectively use Global Design Centre (GBC) staff in Pune, India for APD delivery in Canada West
  • Identify staffing needs (hiring) and support the recruitment and retention of professionals to support this growing business
  • Consistently demonstrate a commitment to the Health and Safety culture within Stantec.

Key Performance Indicators

Be aware of all APD projects and pursuits in Canada West Water. Communicate with Regional Leadership on at least a monthly basis:

  • Status of key opportunities and relationships
  • Feedback / concerns for current APD project delivery by communicating with PMs / teams delivering projects
  • Escalate risks in a timely manner
  • Report on progress in integrating APD delivery into our project delivery practices in Canada West Water.

Collaboratively with the Regional Leadership contribute to:

  • Net Sales Revenue in APD projects
  • Net Sales growth (% over prior year)
  • ROI for APD pursuits

Collaboratively with Project Delivery Leadership in order to contribute to:

  • Meeting as-sold GM during delivery, especially by identifying suitable resources to support delivery teams when challenges arise
  • Adherence to Stantec’s Quality Management Practices
  • Effectively managing delivery risks and avoiding litigation
  • Develop staff understanding and capabilities in the APD space

Maintain positive reviews from clients and contractors using our Client Survey tools.

Maintain an up-to-date repository of Lessons Learned

Meet HSSE goals and targets for Water leadership

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years experience in detailed design and construction of multidisciplinary Water projects or 10 years working in an APD environment.
  • Experience with collaborative APD project delivery.
  • Licensed professional engineer
  • Strong Communication skills

Pay Range:

• Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$111,700.00 - $167,600.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
