Your Opportunity

The Ecosystems Team has an opportunity for a Junior Terrestrial Ecologist in our Thunder Bay office. The successful candidate will join our team of aquatic and terrestrial biologists who value teamwork and enjoy the company of their colleagues.

Your Key Responsibilities

Primary Tasks, working under the supervision of Project Managers and Senior Biologists:

  • Conduct background reviews for natural heritage assessments
  • Participate in field work using Stantec’s Standard Operating Procedures and industry standard protocols with support from experienced staff, including inventory and assessment of: - Wildlife and wildlife habitat
  • Flora and vegetation communities
  • Aquatic habitat
  • Fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, sediment and water quality
  • Species at risk and other species of conservation concern
  • Determining the effectiveness of mitigation efforts for species at risk or other sensitive species or features in Ontario during construction projects
  • Enter, compile, and analyze field data
  • Prepare reports, including natural heritage input to a variety of planning projects such as species at risk assessments, environmental assessments, environmental impact studies, and ecological monitoring
  • Assist in the preparation of applications for authorization under the Endangered Species Act, 2007 or other relevant legislation
  • Occasionally travel for work, including field work in remote locations, which may require intense travel during the field season and on weekends
  • Participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work

Occasional tasks may include:

  • Participate in field sampling for fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, sediment and water quality
  • Conduct aquatic and habitat assessments for fisheries

Your Capabilities and Credentials

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Species identification expertise (e.g., trees and other plants, herptiles, birds, fish
  • Valid Class G driver’s license
  • Enthusiasm for working in field and office setting
  • Ability to work well within a team environment
  • Independent problem-solving abilities, and able to adapt to an evolving work schedule
  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills
  • Organization and time management skills

The following would be considered assets:

  • Previous environmental consulting experience
  • Previous experience conducting surveys for species at risk in Ontario
  • Previous experience supporting environmental assessments and permitting
  • Certification or experience applying Ecological Land Classification in Ontario
  • Certification or experience applying the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System
  • Experience applying the Significant Wildlife Habitat Technical Guide and Ecoregion Criteria Schedules
  • Butternut Health Assessor certification
  • Backpack electrofishing certification and other fisheries experience

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in biology or technical diploma in a related field is required as a minimum
  • Minimum of 1 years of experience as an ecologist or biologist in Ontario

• Locations Outside of Lower Mainland - BC & Various locations in Ontario-$41,900.00 - $56,600.00 Annually
