POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Globe and Mail is seeking a highly motivated Video Editor to join our newsroom for an 18-month contract.
The successful candidate will have strong news judgement, and a proven ability to work with visual journalists to help shape story ideas from start to finish. They will be unflappable under daily deadline pressures, and be comfortable working independently as well as in a team setting.
Strong technical editing skills are essential, as is a passion for how video fits in with the future of digital journalism, particularly with mobile readers.
The Globe and Mail’s visuals team is a multidisciplinary group of designers, developers, photo editors, data journalists and graphic artists. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe’s coverage on everything from long-term investigative projects to breaking news and immersive story formats.
The successful candidate will be a collaborative journalist and a positive advocate within the wider newsroom for the power and value of visuals as core to The Globe’s journalism. They will also have a passion for continually improving processes and workflows in an ever-changing media environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Edit, produce and publish news video from wires, staff and freelance visual journalists
Manage video coverage of planned and breaking news events
Collaborate with the wider visuals team by integrating video into The Globe’s overall storytelling experience
Collaborate on social video with The Globe’s Audience team
Responsible for receiving footage, editing, reviewing with others, exporting, media managing and archiving
Edit video for longer-term projects as required
Explore innovative uses of video for mobile-first journalism
QUALIFICATIONS:
3-5 years of experience working in a newsroom with daily publication demands
Strong news judgement
Ability to work quickly and independently
Ability to collaborate with other teams in the newsroom
Skilled with Final Cut Pro (preferred) or Adobe Premiere Pro
Proficiency with other Adobe products like Photoshop, and Photo Mechanic a plus
Able to review and identify how footage can be used and then execute an edit
Produce work that varies in form and length, from short clips of breaking news to longer ‘mini-doc’ stories
Knowledge and experience of camera operation, sound and lighting, including contemporary Sony cine camcorders and Canon SLRs
Write succinct, impactful copy for headlines, captions and in-video text
Familiarity with CMSs to publish their own videos and review videos supplied by wire providers
Generate story ideas or fresh ways to cover a recurring topic
Skills in motion graphics a plus
SALARY: This position is classified as a Content Editor in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
