Dr. Jackie Dawson at the University of Ottawa, in collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), is searching for a motivated and organized individual to act as a Senior Technician (NR 6) to support the Qanittaq Clean Arctic Shipping Initiative. This position will work specifically on the ships and ice projects.
The CFREF funded Qanittaq initiative aims to address and respond to climate change induced increases in Arctic Shipping, related environmental impacts affecting Arctic communities, and to support Inuit communities’ needs for safe and cost-efficient resupply.
The ideal candidate has a suite of highly technical skills and experience with the following: large volume spatial data, modelling skills, working with data (observational, modelling, satellite, etc.), model diagnostician.
This position will be hired through the University of Ottawa, but will be based in Toronto, Ontario and work closely with colleagues at ECCC. Travel to Ottawa to meet with the project team is required.
Position purpose:
Reporting to the Canada Research Chair, designs, applies and interprets a variety of complex analytical tests and research assignments according to specified experimental protocols, under general supervision. May be responsible for training and supervision of junior staff and/or general laboratory management. Performs highly skilled technical tasks requiring extensive education, training and experience. Is often considered an expert in the field and is expected to keep abreast of techniques and developments in the field independently.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Translates product specifications in designing test procedures and standards.
Recommends product or process changes to improve system performance or to better meet customer or other user needs. Selects and uses appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to meet needs of staff.
Provides complex analysis of samples as part of a facility that provides an external service, using state of the art instruments with many cutting edge technologies.
Works with professional staff in diagnosing causes of system, equipment or material failure using advanced testing methods and equipment.
Acts as a consultant to external research facilities, to provide technical advice and/or complex analysis of research data, which may sometimes lead to joint authorship of scientific papers.
Collaborates with others, internally and externally, in developing new techniques and conducting joint experiments.
Supervises research projects of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists that relate to own area of technical expertise, providing guidance on the design of experiments, the development and revision of research protocols and the interpretation and analysis of research.
Provides technical consultation, advice and instruction to faculty members, researchers and graduate and postdoctoral students on the appropriate use, selection and modification of specialized techniques in area of expertise.
Liaises with other technical experts and may be called upon to provide advice in own field of expertise.
Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
What you will bring:
University degree in relevant specialty and a minimum of six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Some positions may require a graduate degree or more extensive experience in a particular field, procedure, technique or piece of equipment).
Sound understanding of the theories and principles of the discipline plus extensive experience in their application.
Ability to coordinate workflow and use personal judgement (troubleshooting) in applying scientific techniques (May be required to perform mathematical calculations).
Ability to handle dangerous materials, safely operate equipment, and prepare solutions and media.
Bilingualism, spoken and written, is preferred.
