Reporting to both the Director, Campus Wellness and the Nurse Supervisor, the Nurse provides on-campus health care services for clients in a walk-in health center, and in emergency situations on campus. The incumbent applies professional skills to evaluate and give client care following established standards and practices and coordinates and delivers services to promote and maintain an optimal level of well-being and wellness for Mohawk’s student population.
The Nurse provides crisis support to the Student Wellness and Counselling team for students in distress. As an integral part of Student Wellness, the Nurse helps support health promotion and all activities related to mitigating health risk on campus, including COVID-19 (or other infectious disease) reporting, case and contact management, vaccination, and testing.
What you’ll be doing:
Medical Responsibilities
- Provides health care services to students in a drop-in health centre or by responding to identified emergency situations on campus
- Coordinates and delivers direct client care by obtaining relevant client histories, conducting physical examinations and assessments, providing client education for common health problems, anticipatory guidance, health maintenance and disease management and by providing medical management or other appropriate treatment as authorized through delegated acts and medical directives and identified in the treatment plan
- Develops treatment plan including evaluation of care, with physician follow-up and referral to outside medical care as necessary
- Provides first-aid coverage, including training to security and maintenance of first aid kits.
- Provides health advice and services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including but not limited to vaccination, PCR swabs, antigen screening and health teaching under a clinical protocol or the medical directive of a physician.
- Collects specimens such as urine, blood, stool, vaginal, urethral secretions, skin scrapings for lab testing; processing, labels with accompanying requisitions and appropriately store and maintain cold chain and other storage requirements as stipulated through health department.
- Provides TB Tests when required by Public Health.
- Administers drugs or treatments based on policies and procedures and standing orders
- Make referrals and provide one-one health teaching and counselling
- Monitors and reviews lab results for abnormalities and conducts necessary follow-up with patient
- Provides program specific immunization as requested by students and organizes flu and other immunization clinics as required in accordance with department initiatives
- Provides immunizations for non-program requirements as requested or deemed necessary by RN assessment i.e. tetanus booster; HPV vaccine
- Implements and adheres to infection control policies and procedures
- Monitors new development and changes in health care as they apply to individuals, the public or professional practice
- Monitors and maintains patient flow to physician in collaboration with reception staff and other nurse
Documentation and Administration
- Complies with legislated and other required documentation standards for all practices carried out within the Health Centre.
- Initiates, organizes and maintains confidential client records, reports and letters etc. including maintenance of immunization records and client records such as charting every client contact in Electronic Medical Record and charting on client confidential record when procedures or assessment is completed.
- Completes lab requisitions. Initiates, organizes and maintains client records, consent forms, lab test results, clinical notes and ensures that standing orders are kept up to date etc. Provides follow-up contacts with patients with abnormal test results or other issues to be reported to client.
- Compiles monthly or other statistics and documentations as required or requested
- Coordinates daily physician booked appointments and physicians’ and other clinics
- Generates vaccination orders and decide for pick-up as per public health guidelines and following protocols for maintaining cold chain storage
- Ensures the safety and well-being of clients using health services through compliance to all regulatory bodies and legislations applicable to health care practice
Health Promotion and Outreach
- Outreach with student both in person and through social media related to a variety of health promotion topics.
- Connects with students who identify concerns related to exposure, symptoms or diagnosis of COVID-19 and provide guidance and case management supports.
COVID-19 Specific Support
- Supports vaccination verification and medical exemption review.
- Provides nursing support, reporting and documentation to Antigen Screening, PCR testing and vaccination clinics.
- Provides support to arriving international students through referral from the team supporting arrivals under the designated learning institution attestation.
- Provides support to COVID-19 case and contact management.
Other duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- Must have four-year B.Sc.N. Degree and be able to assist in providing emergency and episodic health care. Registered practical nurses with both experience and registered in an RPN to BScN may also be considered.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a diverse health care environment, preferably in hospital emergency, emergency health clinic or community health clinic practicing a wide array of health service delivery to community within a framework of independent practice (triaging, venipuncture, treatment procedures, laboratory work, health teaching and preventative health care).
