About the job
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Corporate Operational Risk Management (CORM), the Director, Operational Risk, is accountable for supporting maintenance of the Operational Risk Management Framework leading continuous improvement of the methodology and underlying Operational Risk programs, including new tools. This dynamic role is accountable to assist in providing second line of defence challenge for specific risks, as well as supporting the Corporate Operational Risk Management program through transformation initiatives, driving innovation, and strengthening program governance, effectiveness, and efficiency.
Sun Life’s Operational Risk Management Framework includes the following elements:
Operational risk appetite (qualitative and quantitative assessments)
Common risk language (taxonomy)
Consistent operational risk assessment methodology
Internal and external operational risk data capture and analysis
Risk and Control Self Assessments
Key Risk Indicators
Scenario Analysis
Operational risk monitoring and reporting
What you'll be doing
Development, maintenance, communication, and oversight of SLF’s implementation of various risk management program elements.
Development, maintenance, and implementation of the various tools meant to identify, measure, manage, monitor and report operational risks.
Responsible for the oversight and the maintenance of governance documents.
Works closely with Business Group Risk Office members and 1st line operational risk personnel in the assessment of risks and effective roll-out of program changes.
Provide second line oversight and challenge for the Operational Risk Management Framework.
Development, maintenance, and implementation of various Operational Risk Reporting
Provide training to the organization on the operational risk management program elements and processes.
Support the preparation of the quarterly operational risk profile presented to senior management and the Board on a quarterly basis. Responsible for the collection, challenge, analysis of information used in reporting; and ensuring integrity of the data used.
Design and implement solutions to remain aligned with regulatory requirements.
Monitor and benchmark SL operational risk practices against industry standards and best practices.
Provide input and advice into strategic decisions and program improvements.
What you'll need to succeed
Over 8 years’ experience in the Financial Services industry preferably in risk management or Finance.
Direct operational risk management experience within a major Federally Regulated Financial Institution, preferably in the Corporate Operational Risk department in a methodology and/or reporting function is preferred.
Strong background in operational risk management, internal controls, and risk management frameworks.
Strong knowledge of risk management principles and factors that contribute to risk, with the ability to assess, measure and monitor risk.
Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail. Good judgement in managing issues and dealing with unique business models.
Well developed writing and visual presentation skills to sufficiently articulate analytics results, options, recommendations and reporting.
Direct experience writing policies and guidelines.
Understanding of products, practices, and operational risks at Sun Life
Effective communication, negotiation, and conflict management skills.
Effective change management, through impact and influence skills.
Proven experience dealing with complexity and ambiguity.
Knowledge of third-party risk management landscape, financial industry leading practices and regulator expectations for third-party risk.
Ability to navigate the cross-business, multi-stakeholder landscape to drive execution of key deliverables.
Strategic mindset - ability to understand client or business requirements - either common or novel, and develop innovative solutions.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
