JOB SUMMARY
The Chaudière Dam Operator Assistant, working in collaboration with the Operator on duty, is responsible for assisting the Operator with all work aspects of regulating the water level in the river to provide the energy generation stations with the adequate fore bay level allowing them to generate to the maximum of their capacity. The Assistant Operator is required to follow the Operator’s instructions.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential responsibilities of the job include but are not necessarily restricted to the following:
Assist with monitoring water levels and making adjustments as required
Immediately report to the Operator any defects which may impair the proper and safe operation of the hoists
Communicate occasionally with the CHLP Powerhouse and Hydro Quebec Operators to provide them with water usage directives
Operate the hoists in a careful manner so their normal operation function is fully maintained
Lubricate essential components of the equipment as needed
Correct any defects that can be remedied using non-tradesman skills and the tools available, otherwise, refer all corrections to the Supervisor
Assist with ensuring that spans are ready to be operated at all times
Ensure that all tools and materials used for duties are kept in proper and safe working order and are returned to their proper storage location after use
Comply with all rules for personnel safety while on the Dam (refer to appendix 6 of the Health and Safety Guide) and work in a safe manner so as not to risk the safety of any person or to damage any piece of equipment
Maintain all working areas and ensure they are clear of snow, ice and debris.
Maintain the working area in the offices, locker room, boiler room, electrical room, diesel room, etc. ensuring they are clean and tidy.
Perform maintenance on property and equipment as needed
Paint identification number or signs on hoist rams or the Dam;
Paint building and equipment;
Change light bulbs;
Perform minor repairs to building components, doors, furniture and shelving;
Perform minor repairs to stop logs, log rollers, skids and steam lances;
Perform minor repairs to enclosures on log hoist machines;
Repair signs, buoy boxes, sand box, etc.;
Perform other handyman duties as may be assigned from time to time, provide they are not part of what is normally skilled trades work and provided that tools and materials are made available to complete the work (eg: prepare the steam lances in the fall for usage in the winter months)
Intercept and warn all unauthorized personnel who may enter the dam premises
Use warning horns to warn any boaters upstream or downstream that may approach too closely to the dam
Monitor and operate the emergency boiler (eg: adding protection product to boiler water, blow down, etc.)
Monitor and operate the steam pressure washer units
Provide guidance and training to the assistant operator as well as to new operators
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or equivalent.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
English is essential, both oral and written;
Basic knowledge of French, both oral and written.
Shift work is required.
Regularly required to work statutory holidays and week-ends.
Much of the work is performed outside in all conditions and temperatures.
Extended physical effort may be required when work is performed outside.
The terms and conditions of employment are governed by the collective agreement between Chaudière Water Power Inc. and Unifor, Local 73.
