Make a difference
Supported by the Training Staff Sergeant, the Academic Training Instructor/Corporal, is responsible for the delivery of the Community Safety Unit’s Training mandate. The incumbent will be required to assist in the design, planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of CSU specific training programs. They will also be responsible for liaising with various stakeholders on training matters.
What you’ll do
Corporate and Planning Responsibilities
- Engages in good labour management relationships; ensuring compliance with collective agreement and TCH human resource policies; and participating in grievance proceedings as required.
- Delivers training and programs, ensuring they are presented in an effective, efficient, economical and environmentally sensitive way.
- Participates in ad hoc committees involving training and related issues as assigned by Staff Sergeant.
- Provides support in crises and emergency situations as required.
- Works with Specialist of Compliance, Training and Quality Assurance to ensure an effective and efficient curriculum is developed and presented to CSU members.
- Works with the training Staff Sergeant to promote health and safety strategies in support of a target of zero lost time due to workplace injury.
- Review of community based statistical data (CSU reports) and make correlating training recommendations to Staff Sergeant.
- Assist Staff Sergeant with the design, planning, coordination, scheduling, instruction, debriefing and evaluation of courses that are delivered by the CSU Training Bureau.
- Works with Staff Sergeant to build an environment that supports staff to achieve business results, provide excellent customer service, effective decision-making, lead healthy lifestyles and maintain a safe workplace.
- Recognizes training/development needs and works with Staff Sergeant to coordinate and develop lesson plans to address those needs.
- Works with Staff Sergeant to provide CSU members performance feedback and takes appropriate action to improve performance, including discipline when necessary
- Assist Staff Sergeant in the development of a tailored curriculum that meets operational needs, inclusive of service to vulnerable tenants and diverse communities.
- Supports and assists the Tactical Corporal in course presentation and supervision of courses.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
Training and Educating
- Ability to motivate class members to learn and participate.
- Demonstrate patience and understanding towards class members.
- Ability to design clear and articulate lesson plans so they are understandable and easily received.
- Promotes the ability and willingness to be flexible and adaptable to respond to diverse challenges and demands.
- Assist with tracking special attention assignments and security details.
- Assists in the design of Dynamic Simulation Training, (Scenario based training), and participates its delivery.
- Assists in the design and delivery of physical defensive tactics to CSU members.
- Provides instruction, demonstrates effective use and deployment of baton and OC spray.
- Assists the team to work in a manner that ensures compliance with legislation and policies including but not limited to, the Memorandum of Understanding with the Toronto Police
- Service and all related provincial and federal statutes, the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Employment Standards Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Conflict of Interest policy, the collective agreement(s) and related labour legislation and the Harassment and Discrimination policy.
- Assist Staff Sergeant with the managing and co-ordination of the work of civilian and uniform personnel in relation to academic training and career development.
- Assist with the facilitation and coordination of courses conducted by external agencies including the Ontario Police College and the Toronto Police Service.
- Research, preparation and presentation of reports pertaining to current and innovative training matters.
- Create opportunities for cross training among various CSU roles.
What you’ll need
- Post-Secondary education in police foundations, law, and Criminal Justice or law enforcement related program.
- Ontario Police College General Investigators certificate or equivalent Ability to input and manipulate data using word processing and spreadsheet software (i.e. Excel and Word) to update and maintain security and dispatch records
- Five (5) years of experience in a law enforcement agency or equivalent, with 2 years demonstrated investigative experience, a college diploma in law enforcement, business administration or equivalent.
- Possess and maintain full security and police clearance including fingerprinting and background check.
- Must maintain Special Constable Status while employed as Community Safety Unit Corporal.
- Must have experience conducting Provincial and Criminal offence investigations.
- Ability to effectively supervise, and mentor staff.
- Competent in Adult Education/ Teaching of Adults principles.
- Possess excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, statutes, by-laws and practices including the Criminal Code, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Liquor License Act, Trespass to Property Act, Mental Health Act, Residential Tenancies Act, Fire Safety Act, various municipal, parking and enforcement by-laws, building and safety standards.
- Ability to apply TCH policies to ensure compliance and consistency in the delivery and assessment of security activities.
- An understanding of TCH’s diverse communities.
- Ability to apply applicable Collective Agreements, Workplace Discrimination and Harassment and Respect at Work Policies.
- Fundamental knowledge of standard office systems, including computers, photocopiers, scanners, printers, etc., with practical application in word processing, data entry and other software packages.
- Well-developed organizational and decision-making skills.
- Strong written communication skills to prepare training materials and reports.
- Must pass mandatory re-qualification training, tests and background investigation/checks, as required.
