Mohawk College educates and serves more than 31,700 full-time, part-time, apprenticeship and international students at three main campuses in Hamilton, at learning hubs across Hamilton through City School by Mohawk, and at the college’s Aviation Facility at Hamilton International Airport. The Associate Dean, Business works in collaboration with the Dean and a team of Associate Deans across the McKeil School of Business, the School of Creative Industries, Liberal Studies and Communication, to set the strategic and operational direction for the Department. The Associate Dean is accountable for the planning, development, delivery and ongoing review of the post-secondary programs in the portfolio.
The incumbent will ensure a collaborative and productive working environment as articulated in the Vision, Mission, Values and Strategic Directions set out by Mohawk College. The Associate Dean provides academic leadership to the diverse programs and course offerings within the Department ensuring the objectives of the programs are attained through effective supervision of teaching and learning processes.
The incumbent will facilitate the on-going review of existing programs, academic quality and integrity, student success, faculty performance and the development of new programs and courses to reflect market changes and the employment needs of learners and industry.
In addition, the Associate Dean conducts investigations of complaints from students and staff, and initiates the problem-solving process and establishes positive relationships with industry and business representatives and provides support to the College’s student recruitment and job placement initiatives.
Specifically, you will:
- Provide academic and administrative leadership to Faculty and Staff involved in the development and delivery of courses and programs offered through the McKeil School of Business, under the general direction of the Dean.
- Contribute to the academic well-being of the College through competent planning and administration of the Department’s programs and service courses, including quality assurance processes such as comprehensive program reviews.
- Ensure that the current and future educational needs of students are met by providing the ongoing review of courses; determining the needs for modification of existing courses/programs; and the introduction of new programs and courses.
- Promote community ventures and educational pathways through networks and develops partnership agreements through Program Advisory Committees, agreements and projects.
- Develop operational policies and procedures for the Department’s programs to meet the needs of students, client groups, community partners, and government ministries/agencies.
- Maintain a high level of staff performance through effective recruiting, selecting, developing, motivating, evaluating, and training of Faculty and Staff.
- Promote and support the ongoing professional development for Faculty and Staff.
- Administer the activities of the Faculty in their teaching assignments and create an effective working environment for the Staff, the teaching & learning process, and ensures that assignments are consistent with college policies and procedures.
- Together with the support of the Operation’s Manager, prepare the initial budget for the Department’s programs for submissions to the Dean, as part of the College’s overall budget process.
- Provide input to the Dean in regards to the financial planning of programs for the School.
- Complete other duties, as assigned.
This role requires effective cross-institutional collaboration with College stakeholders across Academic Schools, The Centre for Entrepreneurship, The Centre for Teaching and Learning, The Research Office, The Registrar’s Office, and other areas as well as, the sector. The Associate Dean oversees the management of full and part-time Faculty and Support Staff, and thus requires understanding how to optimize the contributions of employees and proactively manage in a unionized environment.
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree and several years of teaching experience (preferably in the college sector). Coordination and/or management experience in the post-secondary sector, are highly valued.
This position requires a minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in administration or management, preferably within the college system. The incumbent will need to be organized, and able to multi-task. The incumbent must be a self-directed team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills; be able to create and maintain effective relationships and working partnerships within and outside the organization; and possess negotiation and problem-solving skills gained from collaborating across multiple constituencies and/or within a unionized environment are essential.
The incumbent requires previous experience related to financial planning and budget development, presentation, negotiation, facilitation, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. The candidate should have experience and knowledge of the intersections of indigenous education, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Equity Diversity and Inclusion as they relate broadly to curriculum/program development and teaching and learning.
