Position Summary...

We are currently seeking a senior lawyer with commercial and/or insurance litigation experience, reporting to the Assistant General Counsel (Litigation), to join a best in class legal team. This is an exciting opportunity to work as a strategic partner with the business on a broad range of litigation matters. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 – 10 years of commercial and/or insurance litigation experience at an in-house legal department and/or a leading law firm.

What you'll do...

Responsibilities:

  • Advising on complex litigation matters, including class actions, breach of contract, tort (i.e. occupiers liability, product liability, false arrest, professional negligence).
  • Identifying potential legal or regulatory risks or issues, and partnering cross-functionally with the necessary business units to identify and implement appropriate solutions
  • Negotiating and drafting litigation related documents, policies, and procedures.
  • Educating and training on legal requirements within the business, in partnership with business stakeholders such as Compliance, People, and Operations
  • Effectively managing external counsel across Canada.
  • Identifying and implementing efficient ways of working both within and outside the legal department.

Qualifications:

  • LLB or JD
  • 7+ years of litigation experience at an in-house legal department and/or leading law firm
  • Experience in commercial and/or insurance litigation.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to manage complex matters and communicate practical legal advice to all levels of the company.
  • Ability to manage complex projects through prioritization and disciplined execution.
  • Collaborative, energetic team player capable of handling multiple matters and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong business acumen, sound judgement and interpersonal skills are important as you will have extensive interaction with various business groups, external counsel and adjusters.
  • French is an asset
