This Editorial Manager role will join the MacPherson Institute to oversee and support the International Journal for Students as Partners.
The mission of the MacPherson Institute is through collaboration to explore, enhance, support, and recognize teaching and learning experiences at McMaster. Specifically, the Institute partners with, supports, and connects diverse groups of educators by: 1) creating and delivering professional development that engages educators throughout their careers in teaching and learning in order to enhance the student learning experience; 2) facilitating curriculum development and revision that fosters continuous enhancement and engagement in learning; 3) supporting, conducting and recognizing teaching and learning scholarship that has the capacity to develop, inform, and enhance educational initiatives and student learning; and 4) encouraging and elevating the pedagogical use of educational technologies and creative solutions to enhance teaching and learning.
This position will report to the Lead Educational Developer in the Scholarly Teaching mandate area. The Scholarly Teaching mandate area aims to conduct, support and recognize the scholarship of teaching and learning while offering a range of programs and services for faculty, staff and students interested in teaching and learning scholarship. While the responsibilities and key functions of this role are outlined in detail in this job description, this position will focus primarily on supporting the International Journal for Students as Partners and working closely with the Scholarly Teaching mandate area to align the journal activities with mandate area programming such as the Student Partners Program.
Key responsibilities will also include: overseeing the submission, review, copyediting, and publication process for the journal; organizing meetings of the editorial board and international advisory group; maintaining and updating the journal website and Open Journal System; overseeing contact with senior editor, editorial board, international advisory panel, authors, reviewers, copy editors, McMaster University Library Press, and other stakeholders; promoting the journal within the University, nationally and internationally; working with the Senior Editor to produce Annual Reports; coordinating work of operations team; and setting annual priorities and goals in collaboration with the Senior Editor.

Job Summary:
Working closely with the editorial board, responsible for the timely publication of high-quality research articles in an academic journal from submission to publication. Coordinate all aspects of the academic journal including administration, processes, and policies, and is responsible for journal promotion and dissemination.
Purpose and Key Functions:
- Manage the editorial process of the journal, from submission to publication.
- Oversee the peer-review process, including selecting and communicating with reviewers, ensuring timely and high-quality reviews from an appropriate range of reviewers, and making final decisions on article acceptance in coordination with the editorial board.
- Provide support for peer-reviewers through the development of training sessions, presentations, and guides.
- Provide advice and guidance to authors to ensure that manuscripts are submitted in accordance with the journal’s guidelines, and that revisions are completed in a timely manner.
- Ensure that the journal’s policies and procedures are followed, and that ethical standards are maintained throughout the editorial process.
- Develop and implement new editorial policies, guidelines, and processes for the journal with attention to continuous improvement.
- Coordinate meetings and information sessions.
- Work with the editorial board to identify new trends and emerging topics in the field and help to shape the journal’s editorial direction and vision.
- Coordinate the editorial board including recruitment, retention, and support for new board members.
- Support the promotion of the journal and its content through social media, newsletters, and other channels in order to engage with readers and authors and to broaden the audience for the journal.
- Regularly review and identify databases for journal indexation.
- Manage and update social media and website content.
- Develop and prepare regular reports on the performance of the journal.
- Proofread manuscripts accepted for publication to ensure accuracy and integrity.
- Collaborate to develop, curate and communicate teaching and learning resources for knowledge translation and dissemination in multiple formats for a variety of settings and audiences.
- Make recommendations on issues related to the overall operation of activities, initiatives and workflow related to the journal using a project management lens.
- Identify, build, cultivate and maintain relationships with campus partners and with various stakeholders across the University and the greater international community.
- Advise faculty, staff and students regarding the development, coordination, and enhancement of journal publications.
- Facilitate sessions with campus and international colleagues regarding the journal and good practices for academic writing.
Supervision:
- Provides functional guidance on an ongoing basis.
- Ensures adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff and volunteers for events and activities (may include staffing short-term needs).
Requirements:
- Masters in a relevant field (e.g. English, Communications, or a related field)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience
Assets:
- Experience working with Online Journal Systems (or similar relevant experience).
- Familiarity with Students as Partners pedagogical model.
- Experience in project management and coordination of projects, teams, and/or events that work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and offices in a university environment.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional organization skills.
