Making Meaningful Connections: Effective Communication for 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusion

Including 2SLGBTQIA+ employees has gone from moral courage to a business imperative. We can’t tell someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity by looking at them, so the language we use to describe our identities has always been important and somewhat complex. Even those who identify as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community can lose track of the most current and appropriate terms as well as how to use them in various workplace situations.

Learning Goals:

  • Delve into inclusive workplace communications around gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
  • Understand what to do when you make a mistake.
  • Discover how to act in allyship with 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

Rainbow Washing: Issues and Remedies

A rainbow logo in celebration of Pride sends a message about an employer’s
intention to be inclusive of 2SLGBTQIA+ clients and employees. Rainbows, on their own, do not result in measurable change for 2SLGBTQIA+ employees or achieve objectives related to diversity, equity and inclusion. In fact, new research shows that introducing brand-related measures without meaningful action can backfire and alienate queer and trans jobseekers and employees.

Learning Goals:

  • Showcase how rainbows without action can negatively impact your organization’s brand among the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
  • Identify the key factors influencing employment inequities of 2SLGBTQIA+ employees and job seekers.
  • Provide actionable best practices to build bring a sense of belonging for 2SLGBTQIA+ employees and jobseekers.

Employee Workshops
Labour Market Experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ Communities in Canada: Issues and Actions

There is a well-documented wage gap for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Canada, a group that is more likely to be unemployed or underemployed than the general population. More employers than ever are making a commitment to cultures of belonging and are therefore trying to make their workplace cultures more accepting of 2SLGBTQIA+ workers. But is acceptance enough for our communities to reach their full economic potential? Is focusing on “sensitivity training” for employees at the entry level going to build the next generation of 2SLGBTQIA+ leaders? Pride at Work Canada wants to convene a discussion about the innovative solutions that will be needed for our communities to thrive in the area of employment.

Learning goals:

  • Learn from the experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ employees and job seekers in Canada.
  • Develop solutions to your 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion strategy.

Proud Practices for Employee Resource Groups

Inclusion is often driven by employees on their journey to create workplaces that are welcoming of everyone. The best employers understand that employee resource groups (ERGs), business resource groups (BRGs), affinity groups, and inclusion councils that leverage the lived experience of their employees from equity-deserving communities make their workplaces a more inclusive. Participants leave with a set of defined goals and a 6 to 8-month roadmap to success.

  • Understand the employee group life cycle.
  • Discover tools to use in the strategic planning for ERGs.
