Reporting to the General Manager of the Centre for Climate Change Management, the Project Lead for SME and Cleantech Solutions will be responsible for helping to research, design and communicate projects that support Canadian small businesses and cleantech start- ups as they navigate a changing market and Canada’s transition to the low carbon economy. The Project Lead will conduct research, analysis and provide support to small business leaders. The Project Lead will confidently recommend solutions that often draw on a complex analysis of policy, markets, and forecasting of future opportunities.
This Project Lead role will have experience and expertise in leading lifecycle assessment, carbon accounting, and carbon reporting projects. Preference will be given to those with experience and familiarity with carbon and energy management strategies for businesses, as well as navigating carbon markets.
What you’ll be doing:
- Supporting Canadian small businesses (SMEs) and cleantech companies by understanding their business needs and how they can navigate the transition to the low-carbon economy.
- Perform technical evaluations, such as emissions baselines, lifecycle assessments, carbon accounting exercises, and pre-feasibility assessments.
- Research potential solutions to sustainability and carbon management questions and challenges for SMEs, and effectively communicate complex concepts in an accessible manner.
- Act as a strategic analyst and advisor to project sponsors and partners, this includes building and maintaining professional and productive relationships.
- Write reports for, and present results to, multiple audiences. Translate often complex technical concepts into easy-to-understand language and actionable next steps.
- Project coordination, including stakeholder management and communication, project design, coordination, and execution of deliverables.
- Managing project s to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget.
- Support CCCM and the Energy & Power Innovation Centre (EPIC) Applied Research Teams with additional projects as assigned.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- A university degree in business, sustainability, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- As an asset, a Master’s or post-graduate certificate in sustainability management, environmental management, or resource planning. Additional professional training and certifications in greenhouse gas emissions accounting and protocols, ISO standards, etc. will be considered assets.
- Minimum 3 years work experience.
- Experience in undertaking sustainability assessments related to carbon and energy.
- Experience in scoping emissions baselines, lifecycle assessments, and energy assessments, along with use of associated programs and software.
- Experience leading/coordinating multi-stakeholder projects.
- Experience in stakeholder relations in complex projects, including building and maintaining relationships through accessible written and verbal communication.
- Demonstrated skills in facilitation and consensus-building with a wide range of audiences and stakeholders.
- Experience in project coordination from project scoping to final deliverables.
- Experience in technical writing, preparing report briefs and presentations.
- Experience in applied sustainability, energy concepts, and climate change knowledge.
- Foundational understanding of technical and economic factors related to carbon emissions and energy efficiency as it pertains to multiple sectors.
- Technical expertise in conducting emissions baselines, Lifecycle Assessments, carbon accounting and reporting, and climate change management strategies for businesses. A background in clean technologies and management consultancy as well as sustainability policies as they relate to Canadian SMEs would be considered an asset.
- Basic understanding of principles and policies related to the carbon economy (e.g., carbon taxes, carbon pricing).
- Working knowledge of sustainability reporting/tracking software considered an asset.
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
