Please Note: This is a temporary position starting January 5, 2026, and ending April 30, 2026, with the possibility of extension.

 

Professional writing tutors work with writers (mostly NAIT students) on improving their academic, technical, and professional writing skills via scheduled appointments, drop-in tutoring sessions, and workshops. Tutoring may occur virtually or in-person in the NAIT Writing Centre. Professional tutors also may create virtual learning supports as well as mentor and coach peer tutors.

 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with NAIT students from all schools, departments, and programs
  • Help students understand writing assignments
  • Help students plan and develop writing processes
  • Discuss with international and multilingual students about Canadian writing conventions and academic expectations
  • Introduce brainstorming and drafting strategies
  • Help students organize ideas and develop arguments
  • Help students create effective thesis statements and strong topic sentences
  • Help students integrate primary & secondary sources
  • Review essays, research papers, technical reports, presentations, and other types of writing for flow, clarity, and conciseness
  • Help students with revising, formatting, grammar, style, mechanics, and more
  • Coach students to adopt effective writing and self-editing strategies
  • Visit classrooms and promote the writing center services
  • Develop and deliver writing workshops
  • Maintain and develop virtual writing resources
  • Mentor and support peer writing tutors
  • Identify when other resources are appropriate and make appropriate referrals as needed

 

 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills
  • Outstanding time management skills
  • Accurate knowledge of grammar and punctuation rules
  • Ability to work independently and part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to interact comfortably, positively, and respectfully with diverse individuals who have a range of backgrounds, abilities, and literacy/language skills
  • Ability to explain issues and provide concrete advice in diverse ways, to meet diverse needs of different learners
  • Knowledge of NAIT’s Academic Integrity Policy and Student Rights & Responsibilities Policy

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a diploma program
  • 1-year tutoring experience at a post-secondary learning/writing center
  • Experience working with ESL/EAL students

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

 

 

Remuneration: $26.46 - $33.13 hourly, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay. (Classification – Tutor II).

 

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
