The Department of Physical Therapy in partnership with the Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic invites applicants for the part-time role of Team-based Practice Educator, Physical Therapy (Up to a max of 0.8 FTE). The initial appointment will be for a term of one year with the possibility of reappointment. The job duties and qualifications are outlined below.  

The salary will be commensurate with education preparation and experience, within the range of approximately $80,000 - $125,000 for 1.0 FTE (pro-rated based actual FTE).  Candidates who bring diverse perspectives and lived experiences are encouraged to apply as we strive to enhance diversity, inclusiveness, socio-cultural representation, and perspective in the Faculty of Medicine.

Job Summary: 

This role will play a crucial role in providing team-oriented clinical instruction, mentorship, evaluation and clinical supervision of learners in Physical Therapy while supporting the continuity of physical therapy care of patients within the Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic. The individual will also mentor learners from other professions in a team-based primary care setting while working with the Gateway Clinic team to develop, implement and evaluate models of team-based education and care. 

This role requires the incumbent to maintain a Clinical Faculty Appointment with the Department of Physical Therapy and will work in-person on the UBC Point Grey Campus.  

Organizational Status:  

The Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic is a collaborative project across the medical and health professions, facilitated by UBC Health. UBC’s School of Nursing is the administrative operator of the Gateway Team-Based Care Teaching Clinic.    

This position reports to the Director of Care in the Gateway Clinic in relation to clinical care delivery, the Department of Physical Therapy (Head or their delegate) for clinical education delivery, and the Gateway Program Director for all other operational and scholarly work.  

This position maintains linkages and reporting to the Department of Physical Therapy and the UBC Master of Physical Therapy Program through the incumbent’s Clinical Faculty Appointment.   

ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Clinical Supervision  

  • Supervise and observe Physical Therapy and other Health Professional learners in providing clinical care to Gateway patients, including but not limited to:   

  • daily assessment and treatment, such as assessing clients’ abilities, establishing treatment goals based on diagnoses and implementation and evaluation of physiotherapy interventions and treatments.  

  • Providing physical therapy including therapeutic exercise programs and patient education on strategies that promote or optimize function and reduce pain.  

  • Consulting, coordinating and referring to other team members, specialists or community organizations to support the patient and caregiver in multiple dimensions of their health and wellbeing.  

  • Documenting care, keeping medical records using the clinic’s electronic medical record keeping system.  

  • Using advanced clinical skills and reasoning to optimize their role within the multidisciplinary team while addressing gaps in their knowledge to ensure safe, quality care.   

  • Role model person-centered care for learners by empowering patients and caregivers as experts in their own lives, prioritizing patient agency and advocating for patients and caregivers as equal team members and partners in care and education. Actively involve patients in student learning (e.g. giving feedback to students on communication skills).   

  • Provide student support, mentorship, and training to learners from across the health professions. This may include providing feedback and evaluations to learners.  

Clinical Care  

  • When required due to learner availability and capabilities, provide continuity of care to patients as outlined above.  

Integration and Innovation in Team-Based Education and Practice  

  • Contribute to the development and innovation of interprofessional education and health care service delivery in a team-based primary care environment.  

  • Collaborate with members of the Department of Physical Therapy and participate in MPT Curriculum initiatives to support the advancement of team-based care innovation.  

Quality Improvement and Evaluation  

  • Develop insights from data, research and evaluation to devise and propose meaningful changes for ongoing improvement of clinical teaching, learning and interprofessional practice and education.  

  • Learn, adapt and utilize health and learning technologies (e.g. electronic health record, artificial intelligence) effectively in a rapidly changing health system and health professions education program.  

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Hold or be eligible to hold a Clinical Faculty appointment with the Department of Physical Therapy.   

  • A Master in Physical Therapy (MPT) degree, or equivalent.   

  • Be registered as a Physical Therapist within Canada and be eligible or have active registration in good standing with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC).    

  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience with high level of skill and theoretical knowledge in a relevant practice area.  

  • Previous experience in primary care or experience working in team-based care contexts  

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a clinical educator or preceptor for Health Professional students.  

  • Demonstrate a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and trauma-informed care.  

  • Possess a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.  

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • An additional post-graduate degree in a related discipline is considered an asset.   

  • Clinical experience in primary care patient triage  

  • Previous experience adopting or contributing to innovation in clinical practice or education in a team-based primary care environment.  

  • Previous experience demonstrates a commitment to cultural humility and lifelong learning to develop technical, relational, and professional skills.  

  • Previous experience in pursuing evaluation and research to advance collaborative health education and practice improvement.
