Job
Summary:
Reporting
to the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Director, Employment Relations and
Talent Acquisition is a member of the Human Resources Leadership Team and is
accountable for providing expert advice, leadership, strategic planning,
direction, and effective management of the Employment Relations, and Talent
Acquisition portfolio. As a member of the Human Resources Leadership Team, the
incumbent is responsible for championing the College’s People Strategy and
advancing its important initiatives and priorities.
The
incumbent is responsible for developing, implementing, and administering
leading and equitable human resources practices and policies to promote mature
employment relations with all employee groups (i.e. Academic, Administrative,
Support Staff and Non-Bargaining Unit employees), and is accountable for
ensuring that the College is compliant with all contractual and legislative
requirements, while recruiting and retaining staff to meet both current and
future College needs. The incumbent represents and/or acts as a
resource/representative at various College/Union Committees and at grievance
and arbitration hearings and other administrative tribunals.
What you’ll be doing:
Operational
Leadership – Employment Relations:
- Leads employment relations strategy and ensures the provision of effective and efficient HR consulting services to clients to support the achievement of the College’s strategic objectives.
- Provides guidance and advice on the interpretation and application of HR policies, practices, and procedures, Collective Agreements, Terms and Conditions of Employment for Administrative Employees, the application of legislation and regulations; as they pertain to all aspects of the Human Resources function including talent and performance management, discipline issues, organizational restructuring, etc.
- Manages a broad range of human resources management programs and applications providing consultative advice and professional support to College Management and/or employees in regards to labour and employee relations, and maintains positive relationships with bargaining agents.
- Leads all labour relations activity to ensure compliance with all pertinent contractual and legislative requirements and regulations
- Interprets the Collective Agreements to ensure that the interpretation, application and communications with all employees, managers, and unions is consistent, and that all levels of management understand their rights and obligations.
- Liaises with union representatives to investigate and informally resolve labour relations issues. Arranging and carrying out alternative dispute resolution processes to resolve grievances and other disputes.
- Administers the layoff/redeployment process.
- Acts as the College’s representative and/or resource to legal counsel and management representatives throughout the grievance and arbitration process to ensure the satisfactory and expedient handling and resolution of grievances. This may include utilization of the mediation process, preparing the case, managers, and any other witnesses, researching and advising on strategy, negotiating with union representatives, recommending and executing settlements on behalf of the College.
Operational Leadership - Talent Acquisition:
- Provides oversight to the Manager, Talent Acquisition, who is accountable to lead and execute the comprehensive talent acquisition strategy.
- Oversees the College’s talent acquisition policies and procedures to ensure all staffing matters including hiring, promotions, secondments, temporary assignments and transfers are equitable and in compliance with applicable collective agreements, College policies and legislation, and best practices.
- Ensures Mohawk College’s talent acquisition policies and procedures promote equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Collaborates with college partners to ensure that Mohawk College’s talent acquisition aligns with Mohawk College’s People Strategy, and in particular the pillars of EDI and Truth & Reconciliation.
Administration & Management:
Leads and Manages Staff:
- Plans, organizes, supervises and manages the Employment Relations and Talent Acquisition teams of the Human Resources department including the full scope of managerial / supervisory responsibility within the employee life cycle i.e. mentoring and coaching; performance and project management; fosters learning and growth, promotes currency and continuous improvement, assigns and monitors tasks and ensures completion; sets work priorities; supports team development. Meets all supervisor obligations under Occupational Health and Safety Act and supports continuous improvement of health and safety at Mohawk College.
Management of Financial and Physical Resources:
- Accountable for budget and physical resource management, including efficiencies and optimization.

What
you’ll bring to the role:
- A four (4) year Degree or equivalent in such disciplines as Human Resources Management/Labour Relations, Business with Human Resources/Labour Relations or a related field is required at the point of hire into this position.
- A minimum of nine (9) years of progressive human resource consulting and/or labour relations experience.
- A minimum of nine (9) years of progressive management experience.
Experience managing multiple teams and handling multiple projects, simultaneously. - A Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation is highly preferred.
- Certification in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is an asset.
- Expertise in labour relations combined with excellent knowledge of human resource functions and pertinent legislation.
- High level of skill in interpreting relevant materials with excellent research, analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Excellent communication skills to conduct negotiations, resolve disputes, present cases before tribunals.
- Broad perspective that fosters the development of options and solutions in an organizational context of collective agreements and competing demands.
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community.
