The Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University is seeking applications for an academic physician at the Assistant Professor level within the Contractually Limited Appointment category. This appointment is a full-time faculty position for a 3-year term, renewable, and academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The start date will be negotiated between the department and the successful candidate.

 

The successful candidate will contribute to the university's vision of excellence in family medicine, aligning with the core values of McMaster University and the Department of Family Medicine. They will engage in teaching, research, and clinical practice, to advance the field of family medicine. The role involves conducting high-quality research focused on primary care health systems, health policy, health equity, and the dynamics between primary care teams and patients. This may be informed by expertise and formal training in one or more of the following areas: health policy, health professional education, health human resources, health management, health systems or health services.  The successful candidate will also have experience conducting academic activities that complement and enhance our existing departmental leadership in primary care policy and strengthening the primary care workforce, encouraging growth within this area.

 

This position is for physicians who are active researchers, interested in balancing their clinical work with conducting and translating research findings into policy and practice, advocating for effective primary care, and contributing to innovation in and evaluation of new models of family medicine and primary care service delivery. Applicants with a CCFP designation will be supported to sustainably maintain their clinical interests; up to 40% of professional time may be dedicated to research and scholarship activities with the specific balance to be negotiated. Mentoring and leading the next generation of academic health researchers within the Faculty of Health Sciences is also a key responsibility, along with participating in the educational programs of the Faculty and the Department of Family Medicine.

 

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent experience in a discipline relevant to primary care policy and be licensed (or eligible for immediate licensure) as a primary care physician in Ontario, Canada. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, and externally funded research program. Experience in teaching and mentoring at various educational levels, including undergraduate, graduate, and medical training, is essential. The ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary research teams and engage with diverse stakeholders such as healthcare providers, policymakers, and community organizations is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary, with the capability to present research to both academic and non-academic audiences. A strong commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all professional activities is expected.

Since 1967, the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University, including our Divisions of Emergency Medicine and Palliative Care, has been making a difference in our communities. Working with government, academic, clinical and community partners, we are building on nearly 60 years of history of informing the way primary health care is designed and delivered in Canada.

 

Through our robust research programs, including the David Braley Primary Care Research Collaborative, we ask and answer important primary care research questions that matter to the lives of people we serve and to those providing care. Our research informs clinical practice, shapes health policy, contributes to health professional education, and supports population health. In the context of the current primary care crisis, the DFM is deeply committed to strengthening primary care through policy-oriented research that is responsive to current patient, population and health care provider needs. The successful candidate will join a strong cadre of primary care researchers, and receive strong research mentorship to develop and strengthen their portfolio.

The Department of Family Medicine is supported by skilled in-house staff in human resources, faculty relations, finance, facilities management, information technology, knowledge translations, communications and general administration. Our leadership team consists of strong faculty-professional manager dyads in each domain who, together, provide both strategic and operational direction aligned with the Department’s mission.

 

The Department is part of McMaster University, which ranks among Canada’s most research-intensive universities. The primary location of work for this role will at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre situated in Hamilton, a city full of artists, restaurants, cultural activities, walkable neighbourhoods, hikes and waterfalls.
