Why join us?

The IESO is committed to ensuring Ontario’s electricity system meets the province’s needs today and into the future. We are charged with purpose, delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity for homes, businesses, and communities across the province. We are energized to grow, embracing opportunities to shape the future of a dynamic and evolving energy sector while advancing our careers. We are powered by teamwork, supported by diverse and passionate colleagues who foster respect, celebrate successes, and thrive on shared achievements. At the IESO, it’s not just what we do—it’s who we are!

Who we are

Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come.

This role is a part of the Ex-post team within Markets and Reliability. This is a union job.

What makes this role exciting

The energy sector is rapidly evolving, offering exciting new opportunities for those who want to make a difference.

The Ex-post team plays a critical role in ensuring integrity in Ontario's electricity market by collaborating with both Day-Ahead and Real-Time operators to resolve discrepancies and errors to maintain accurate market data for settlement purposes. The team utilizes a variety of advanced market tools to monitor and administer market schedules and prices, making it a dynamic and impactful part of the market operations team.

What you’ll do

In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

  • Using power system and market rule understanding, provide accurate, timely and auditable settlement-ready data from real-time processes to associated IESO departments consistent with the obligations of the Market Rules and supporting departmental processes. Collect, verify and prepare settlement-ready data for off-market transactions. These data submissions include but are not limited to areas such as Market Suspension and Resumption, Administrative Pricing, Market Data Verification, Ancillary Service Contracts, Emergency Transactions, Notice of Disagreements, Data Publishing, and associated reporting.
  • Invoke the functions to establish administrative prices and corresponding market schedules:
    • following outages to IESO administered markets software, hardware and communications systems that resulted in the IESO being unable to publish prices and market schedules;
    • where incorrect inputs which affected the output of the dispatch algorithm have resulted in incorrect prices;
    • where the real-time energy market or the operating reserve market has been suspended.
  • Recommend the required course of action in establishing administrative prices and corresponding market schedules.
  • Perform market data correction for both routine and complex issues.  Correct energy and operating reserve market data before this information is provided to the settlement process for determining settlement amounts.
  • Prepare reports such as Dispatch Deviation Report. Confirm that all reports have been successfully published.
  • Support Market Participant NOD (Notice of Disagreement) investigations to determine actions required to ensure correct settlement outcome.
  • Provide input to the ongoing improvement of Ex-post tools and recommend changes and development of software tools.
  • Perform other duties as required.

In a typical day, you will provide technical expertise and analysis in the provision of accurate, timely and auditable settlement-ready data (including prices and schedules) from real-time processes to associated IESO departments consistent with the obligations of the Market Rules.

Role Requirements

Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills.
To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • Requires knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control, mathematics and computer science to carry out engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the steps and interfaces involved in ensuring that correct settlement statements are issued to market participants, the mechanics involved in administering prices and corresponding market schedules in the event of Market Suspension, hardware/software failures, data errors, IESO business process failures; and the verification and correction of market data in the event of errors or omissions..  Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports and process descriptions/user guides.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of 4 years University Education, or by having the equivalent.
  • Requires exposure to the overall power system operation through progressive training in an appropriate technical field to maintain a thorough understanding of System Operation. Requires considerable exposure to system and market operation practices and procedures, including legislation, resource utilization, and system control techniques to acquire a good understanding of system limits and system anomalies and to understand system and market conditions and results.  Requires computer experience including exposure to statistical and database software, desktop software applications, computer data conversion, various PC-based query and calculation tools and computer system interfaces.  Requires experience in researching the practices and procedures of other jurisdictions, utilizing theoretical assumptions and considering the merits of various alternatives.  Requires experience in guiding, training and providing advice to individuals and good customer service skills.
  • A period of 6 years and up to 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
