Career Opportunity
The Bus Maintenance and Shops department is hiring a Manager of Bus Maintenance for one of its city garages. This position offers an opportunity to develop leadership skills through rotational assignments, cross-training, and hands-on experience. The role involves overseeing maintenance activities for both unionized and non-unionized staff, making it ideal for individuals passionate about team leadership and operational excellence.
This position manages a 24-hour/day, 7 days'/week operation and is required to be on-call to deal with emergency situations outside normal working hours. The assigned work location will be determined by senior management. The incumbent may be moved to other Bus Maintenance & Shops Garages in accordance with operational needs.
What You Will Do
- Planning, directing, managing, staffing, and controlling the work activities of the bus maintenance garage
- Ensuring that sufficient buses, non-revenue vehicles and equipment are available, in a safe and reliable condition, to allow other Departments to meet daily revenue service, related transit revenue operation and non-revenue support activities
- Overseeing operational efficiency, employee training, effective labour relations, workplace safety, regulatory and legislative compliance, and budgetary and financial effectiveness
- Directing and overseeing all aspects of the maintenance, repair, servicing and cleaning of buses, non-revenue vehicles and equipment; ensuring facility/shop equipment and systems are operational
- Ensuring employees are properly qualified and trained in work and safety procedures; ensuring regulatory and legislative requirements are adhered to and complied with (e.g. MTO inspections, environmental issues, waste disposal, etc.)
- Preparing financial budgets to manage business plans and preparing relevant reports and presentations for up to the Commission level
- Maintaining a professional relationship among unionized employees and staff to ensure overall effectiveness of the workforce
- May be required to substitute for other Managers in Bus Maintenance, the Senior Manager and the Head - Bus Maintenance
- Participation in the TTC customer service Ambassador Program

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
- Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (Engineering), or substantial progressively responsible experience in a management capacity over related functions, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (P. Eng.) is considered an asset.
- Certification as a Truck & Coach Technician (310T), Automotive Service Technician (310S) or other related Trade Certification and/or a Site Operator are considered assets
- Possession of a valid "CZ" Driver's License would be an asset
- Extensive knowledge of concepts and practices associated with fleet maintenance management including, standards and procedures development, program maintenance, scheduling, resource allocation, etc.
- Extensive knowledge of relevant vehicle maintenance principles, practices, preventative maintenance programs, quality assurance and associated technology as well as the related trades, certifications and disciplines
- Strong knowledge of relevant policies and procedures, government laws and regulations as they apply to a large bus maintenance/repair operation and motor vehicle safety standards and maintenance (e.g. MTO regulations & procedures, Canadian Environmental Protection Act, etc.,)
- Knowledge of business administration, statistical analysis, budgetary, human resources policies and legislation/regulations regarding human rights, employment, safety, etc. (e.g. Corporate Policies, Collective Agreements, Ministry of Labour Regulations, Employment Standards Act, etc.)
- Sound business judgement combined with excellent administrative, analytical, investigative, time management and problem solving skills
- Strong management and interpersonal skills are required; ability to effectively manage, motivate, counsel, coach, discipline, commend and assess performance of subordinate employees
- Well organized, excellent team building, leadership and decision making skills; very strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills with familiarity of TTC computerized systems (e.g. IFS, VWO), Fuel Management System, Materials Systems, Job Based Cost System, etc.; and relevant software programs)
- May be required to obtain certification as an Internal Combustion Alternate Fuel Technician for propane (ICE/P)
- Completion of the St. John’s Ambulance Course in First Aid required
