Job Summary
The UBC Department of Medical Genetics seeks to be an inspiring and productive community of scholars; an outstanding provider of knowledge, technical expertise, and compassionate care for our patients; contributors to the scientific advance of our discipline; and a credible and respected source of information and advice to society at large. While focusing on areas of genetic medicine that we deem to be particularly important, we view diversity of approach and techniques to be an essential strength of our Department.
We acknowledge that the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine and its distributed programs, which include four university academic campuses, are located on traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of Indigenous peoples around the province.
The Research Manager works under the general direction of Dr. Elliott in the Department of Medical Genetics and supports research focused on evaluating the clinical genetics workforce, models of care, and integration of genetic counsellors across clinical environments. The role applies advanced qualitative and quantitative methodologies to conduct scoping reviews, data analyses, and interviews with patient and clinician participants. The Research Manager also contributes to manuscript preparation, supervises research staff and trainees, and collaborates with internal and external partners to ensure the successful execution and dissemination of research outcomes. Operating with a high degree of independence, this position requires expertise in genetics, clinical ethics, and genetic counselling, along with strong communication and mentoring skills.
Organizational Status
The Research Manager reports to Dr. Elliott, the Principal Investigator, and functions with a high level of independence under general direction. The position is based in the Elliott Laboratory, located in the Clinical Support Building at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital (BCCHR).
The Research Manager works closely with Dr. Elliott and members of the Elliott Lab to support the design, execution, and analysis of research activities. The role also collaborates with faculty, clinical partners, research staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows within the Department and with external research and clinical collaborators as required.
The position participates in weekly laboratory meetings, contributes to discussions of ongoing research, and provides guidance and mentorship to trainees. While primarily based at BCCHR, the Research Manager may interact with other UBC and Faculty of Medicine research teams and administrative offices as necessary to support the research program.
Work Performed
Conducts comprehensive research on the clinical genetics workforce and service-delivery models, including assessment of efficiencies, integration of genetic counsellors in clinical environments, and evaluation of clinical services.
Develops, implements, and monitors project proposals, research protocols, work plans, and timelines to achieve project objectives.
Performs scoping reviews, literature syntheses, and both qualitative and quantitative data collection, including interviews with patient and clinician participants.
Performs data analyses, interprets results in terms of service-delivery implications, and makes professional recommendations regarding service model improvement and workforce integration.
Operates independently on daily research activities under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, with periodic review of findings and planning for additional projects.
Supervises, mentors, and provides guidance to research staff, trainees, and lab members, including graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, on data collection, analysis, and methodological approaches.
Teaches and mentors lab members in the application of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
Collaborates with internal lab members and external research or clinical partners to support project objectives and data generation.
Prepares manuscripts, presentations, and reports to disseminate research findings to academic, clinical, and stakeholder audiences; presents findings at regular meetings.
Contributes to the preparation of grant applications and funding proposals in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
Liaises with research governance bodies (e.g., ethics review boards, institutional offices) to ensure regulatory compliance and address queries from funders or oversight bodies.
Participates in budget forecasting, monitors adherence to project budgets, and ensures efficient use of resources.
Exercises professional judgment in the application of research methods, decision-making on analyses, and planning of subsequent research activities, ensuring alignment with project objectives and research quality standards.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in research design, data analysis, or interpretation could lead to inaccurate findings and compromise the validity and credibility of the research outcomes. Failure to adhere to ethical research standards or established study protocols could negatively affect participant confidentiality, data integrity, and the reputation of the Principal Investigator, Department, and the University.
Poor judgment in supervising staff or trainees, or inadequate attention to detail in data management, could result in delays in project timelines, loss of research data, or diminished quality of publications and funding opportunities. Inaccurate or incomplete communication of results could affect subsequent research directions, collaborations, and the overall success of the project.
Supervision Received
The incumbent works with considerable latitude in planning and conducting research activities, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Work is reviewed periodically by the Principal Investigator for alignment with project objectives, research standards, and ethical requirements. The incumbent operates independently on day-to-day tasks, seeking guidance as needed on complex methodological, ethical, or collaborative issues, while maintaining accountability for quality and timeliness of research outputs.
Supervision Given
Provides guidance, training, and mentorship to research staff, trainees, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Oversees daily research activities and delegates tasks as needed to ensure project objectives are met in accordance with established protocols and standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in Genetics or related discipline with a proven track record in genetic counselling research methodologies. Experience in qualitative methodologies preferred.
Formal training in clinical ethics preferred.
Experience with REDCap, Excel and R recommended.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment.
Strong academic publication record in the fields of clinical genetics and genetic counselling.
Strong writing skills. Incumbent will write manuscripts relating to work conducted with Dr. Elliott.
Proven track record of supervising and mentoring clinical trainees and junior lab personnel required (e.g., research assistants, undergraduate and graduate trainees (including MSc Genetic Counselling students)).
Evidence of success in obtaining research grants or fellowship funding an asset.
