Career Opportunity
Looking for a new and exciting job opportunity? We are looking a Mechanical Design Engineer where you’ll contribute to the mechanical engineering design of transit facilities and related structures, from early concepts through final detailed plans. You’ll also help develop standard drawings and provide hands-on construction support through field reviews and shop drawing assessments. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys both design and real‑world project involvement.
What You Will Do?
- Deliver mechanical engineering expertise across building services systems, including HVAC, plumbing, drainage, fire protection, high‑pressure piping, fluid storage/distribution, vehicle servicing equipment, emergency tunnel ventilation, elevators, and escalators.
- Prepare mechanical designs, drawings, specifications, and contract documents aligned with project and user requirements.
- Lead mechanical design on projects where mechanical systems form a major scope of work.
- Stamp/seal and sign engineering documents in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) requirements.
- Perform engineering analyses and design calculations to develop final system designs.Provide sketches, markups, and direction to technologists and draftspersons; review their work for accuracy and compliance.
- Establish mechanical system design concepts and provide technical input to other disciplines.
- Research and apply relevant codes and standards (OBC, NBC, OHSA, OFC, ASHRAE, ASPE, ANSI/ASME, CSA, ESA, TTC standards).
- Assist with CADD drawing preparation using Bentley MicroStation.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and support development of mechanical specifications.
- Contribute to Division 1 specifications, tender evaluations, and bid award processes.
- Communicate with authorities having jurisdiction to confirm code requirements and obtain design approvals.
- Review internal and consultant designs, drawings, and reports; assess development proposals impacting TTC assets.
- Provide construction-phase support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, issuing clarifications, and assessing contractor submissions.
- Conduct site visits to monitor progress, identify deficiencies, and verify compliance with design intent.
- Prepare field review reports, participate in commissioning, and conduct final inspections.
- Evaluate contractor claims and contribute to addenda, change orders, and cost estimates.
- Promote safety, maintain professional relationships, and escalate sensitive issues appropriately.As a TTC employee, you will be responsible for promoting a respectful work and service environment that supports diversity, inclusion, and is free from harassment and discrimination. What Qualifications Do You Bring?
- University degree in Mechanical Engineering, with experience in mechanical building services for transit or related facilities within a multidisciplinary design environment.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Ontario (mandatory).
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
- In‑depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, methods, and practices for the design and construction of transit‑related buildings, facilities, and equipment.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and fire protection.
- Experience designing fleet‑servicing systems (fluid distribution, storage tanks, etc.), escalators, elevators, hoisting/conveying equipment, fare collection systems, and emergency tunnel ventilation.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and standards such as OBC, NBC, OHSA, OFC, ASHRAE, ASPE, ANSI/ASME, CSA, ESA, and TTC Design Standards.
- Proficiency with Bentley MicroStation or Autodesk AutoCAD, building heating/cooling analysis software, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to acquire strong knowledge of TTC and EC&E Group organizational structures, policies, and procedures.
- Successful completion of TTC safety training relevant to assigned duties.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Subway/SRT Rule Book certification.
