Job Summary
UBC Forestry’s Teaching and Learning Support (TLS) team provides faculty members, teaching staff, and students with excellent services and resources to improve their teaching and learning experiences in in-person, online, and hybrid environments. The TLS team takes on various tasks, including learning technology innovation and support, course design/redesign, community engagement, and educational research.
The Teaching & Educational Technology Coordinator in the TLS team plays a key role in designing and implementing educational technology (EdTech) solutions to meet the needs of various educational programs and initiatives in UBC Forestry. The position will advise on the effective use of diverse EdTech, and develops strategies to enhance accessibility and inclusive teaching. In addition, this position will investigate cutting-edge EdTech on their applications in Forestry courses.
Organizational Status
Reports to Associate Director, TLS. Works closely with other members of the TLS team, IT team, Faculty, staff, and other instructional support and educational units.
Work Performed
EdTech Consultation and Implementation
- Advice to instructors, program employees, student employees, and other clients in using the learning management system, as well as selecting, integrating, and implementing diverse EdTech.
- Assists the Unit Manager on the design and development of EdTech solutions to align with the objectives of educational programs and initiatives across various delivery modes (e.g. in-person, online, hybrid)
- Implements digital teaching materials and multimedia for educational programs in Forestry through the learning management system and related EdTech.
- Incorporates innovative approaches for instructors to enhance accessibility and universal design for learning across various learning modalities.
- Works with the AV staff in the IT team to manage teaching-related equipment (e.g., 360-degree camera, motion-tracking/Owl camera, audio device, etc.), and supports the hybrid lectures, seminars, and meetings.
- Supports the operations in assessments, and help implement assessment strategies in the learning management system through EdTech and related API (i.e., application programming interface).
- Works with instructors and other units at UBC (e.g., Student Services, Forestry IT, Centre for Accessibility, LT Hub, etc.) to organize and deliver in-person and online assessments.
- Responds to incidents and requests in a timely manner, and provides solutions and/or a work-around to accommodate the clients’ immediate needs.
- Documents and follows up on incidents and requests, as well as managing the escalations of incidents and requests when required to ensure issue resolution.
Teaching Innovation
- Investigates innovative and emerging EdTech (e.g., augmented reality tools, artificial intelligence tools, etc.) on their applications in the context of Forestry courses.
- Examines the functions, policies, and procedures for the use of innovative EdTech, and conducts the Privacy Impact Assessment according to UBC’s privacy and security standards.
- Supports the Unit Manager on negotiation and consultation with EdTech service providers for procurement, licensing, support and implementation for Forestry courses.
- Develops recommendations and plans to employ innovative EdTech in Forestry courses.
- Coordinates pilot projects on innovative EdTech in Forestry.
- Liaises and supports the Unit Manager in providing technical advising for the applications of the teaching grants and funding at the faculty and university levels.
- Reviews the applications to the Forestry Teaching Innovation Fund, and delegates work to plan and implement EdTech solutions in the approved projects, under the guidance of the Unit Manager.
Data Analytics and Educational Research
- Provides support in conducting in-depth analyses using different teaching-related datasets through programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Matlab, etc.) to derive patterns and trends for evaluation and educational research.
- Assists with production of publication-ready visualizations of teaching and learning data with appropriate tools (e.g., RStudio, QGIS, ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, etc.).
- Interprets data analysis results and visualizations to build reports that inform course planning, management, and research under the guidance of the Unit Manager.
- Leverages the use of available teaching and learning data to improve course activities through EdTech and learning analytics.
- Investigates up-to-date information and policies on EdTech and learning analytics.
- Assist the Unit Manager and TLS team in designing, development, and modifying surveys (e.g. Qualtrics) to evaluate the teaching and learning experience of instructors, teaching assistants, and students in Forestry.
Operation Systems and Faculty Guidelines
- Maintains the TLS website with other team members using WordPress and HTML.
- Develops and manages content in open-source Canvas sites created by the Faculty of Forestry.
- Produces online newsletters through digital email marketing tools to summarize key updates in university policies, EdTech, and faculty guidelines.
- Documents best practices, guidelines, and resources to assist the use of operation systems, the learning management system, and EdTech.
- Works closely with the Senior Manager, Educational Strategies, on the management of student employees as needed.
- Works collaboratively with other team members and Forestry IT to assist the daily operation and management of Forestry TA application portal.
- Performs other related duties as needed.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The position is required to exercise professional judgment when undertaking duties and responsibilities. Poor decisions or errors in judgment may result in the inefficient use of educational resources, the learning management system, EdTech, or teaching-related equipment. It could have a negative impact on the quality of forestry courses. The consequences of staff error could damage the reputation of the TLS team, IT team and the Faculty of Forestry.
Supervision Received
Works independently in accordance with general directions of the TLS team and directly reports to the Associate Director, TLS.
Supervision Given
This position works closely with and may supervise Learning Tech Rovers, Co-op students, and other student employees.
Minimum Qualifications
- University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in forestry, environmental sciences, or education with up-to-date knowledge of educational technologies and learning management systems.
- Experience in using the learning management system and different educational technologies supported by UBC.
- Good working knowledge of web & teleconferencing and Webinar systems like Zoom and MS Teams.
- Familiar with Windows OS and Mac OSX environments as well as basic operation and support of laptop computers.
- Knowledge in forest education and related studies (e.g., conservation, ecology, climate change, and geomatics) is preferred.
- Knowledge in inclusive classrooms, universal design, and equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in educational settings is an asset.
- Prior experience of working as a Teaching Assistant in UBC Forestry would be an asset
- Experience with survey design (Qualtrics) as well as data management, analysis, and visualization (R, Python, QGIS, ArcGIS, MATLAB, Adobe Illustrator, etc.).
- Experience with conducting research and manuscript writing.
- Knowledge in basic web maintenance (WordPress, HTML, etc.).
- Experience in working with technical and non-technical clients.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks with priorities in a diverse team environment.
- Ability to respond appropriately to inquiries in person, on phone, and in emails, and make appropriate referrals.
- Ability to effectively communicate with instructors, teaching assistants, students, and other members of the TLS team.
- Strong organizational, planning, and research skills.
