Job Summary
The Student Engagement Coordinator is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of programs that contribute to a positive living and learning environment for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. This role is instrumental in the delivery of programs and services in support of a culture of learning, leadership, involvement and service for all students in the Faculty of Arts at UBC. 

The Student Engagement Coordinator reports to the Arts Student Engagement Officer, working both independently and in strong collaboration with staff in the Work Integrated Education and Student Engagement team, and the Centre for Student Development and Leadership to support teams of student staff and volunteers.

Organizational Status
The Student Engagement Coordinator reports to the Student Engagement Officer. The incumbent is a member of the Work Integrated Education and Student Engagement team within the portfolio of the Associate Dean, Students, in the Faculty of Arts. Arts Student Engagement enhances the experience of undergraduate Arts students through timely developmental supports and resources to encourage critical thought and learning on their journey in, through, and out of their degree.

The incumbent works independently with direction from the Arts Student Engagement Officer; the work of the unit is done with oversight from the Executive Director, Work Integrated Education and Student Engagement with support from the Associate Dean Students for the Faculty of Arts.

The incumbent will work in collaboration with Arts student service departments (such as Arts Academic Advising, Arts Co-op, and the Arts Dean’s Office Academic units and programs across the faculty, as well as student organizations and staff at the Centre for Student Development and Leadership. The position will help to supervise and train student staff and volunteers.

Work Performed
The incumbent works cooperatively with other staff, students, and faculty to ensure that common goals for the unit and the Faculty of Arts are achieved. Responsibilities include:

1.           Coordinate and implement existing programs within the Compass Student Engagement Hub designed to bridge students’ curricular and co-curricular experiences. The position may also help to deliver programs developed in collaboration with Faculty of Arts departments and academic programs, UBC Orientations, Arts Peer Academic Coaches, the Arts Undergraduate Society, strategic career initiatives, and may include others developed in collaboration with other student engagement colleagues on campus.

Responsibilities may include: supporting student staff;; maintaining and enhancing collaboration with staff, faculty, and alumni partners; managing logistics; facilitating meetings and events in-person or online; developing action plans to achieve program targets and outcomes; conducting evaluation of programs and assessment of student learning; and making recommendations to improve programs and services for the future.

Is the primary contact for Arts Communications on behalf of the Compass, and oversees Compass communication campaigns (via social media, other digital communication channels) and print communications executed by Arts Communications on behalf of the Compass. Develops content for the Compass web site, including pre and post event promotions and resources, and other digital and print communications.

2.           Assist in all aspects of the development, implementation, delivery and assessment of various programs and activities designed to enhance the student experience. Focus on supporting student leaders and identifying pathways, including removing obstacles, in the development of effective and sustainable student support programs. Integrate assessment of student leader learning and programmatic outcomes to facilitate evidence-based decision-making.

3.           Recruit, select, and train Arts student leaders. Provide support and guidance to student leaders in the design and delivery of programs and services that support all Arts undergraduate students; facilitate personal and professional reflection and goal setting conversations/activities with individual student leaders.

4.           Participate in building resources and program supports (both online and face to face) to support and enhance student engagement, identify gaps in the current provision of resources and program supports, and develop sustainable solutions, which may include the development and implementation of new programs and services.

5.           Participate in cross-campus committees and communities of practice. Represent the views and perspectives of the Faculty of Arts and the Work Integrated Education and Student Engagement team in a thoughtful and clear way.

6.           Maintain current awareness of the literature and research in the field of student affairs, particularly in the Canadian context. The incumbent will participate on other projects and committees as they evolve within the Faculty of Arts and perform other responsibilities as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment may cause serious results and identifiable deterioration to faculty and student relations; reduce services; cause embarrassment; increase event and program costs; and impact negatively the Faculty‘s reputation and accountability with organizations, students, faculty, and staff. Decisions have an impact on the development of relationships both within the university and in external communities. Decisions affect the credibility of the Work Integrated Education and Student Engagement portfolio, and the Faculty of Arts programs and services, and hence the success of these initiatives university- and community- wide.

Supervision Received
Position is supervised by the Student Engagement Officer in the Faculty of Arts. As a member of the Work Integrated Education and Student Engagement team, the incumbent exercises resourcefulness in the coordination and delivery of programs. This position is expected to function within clearly articulated procedures, priorities, and strategic objectives. Work is reviewed for quality and effectiveness of results.

Supervision Given
Recruits, hires and supervises program volunteers. May supervise or advise student staff in the coordination and delivery of student support programs and resources.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working either professionally or as a student in a post-secondary environment in event management, online and in-person program development or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

- Experience in a Windows-based environment, good knowledge of Internet technologies and willingness to learn to use new systems.

- The ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

- Knowledge of the field of student affairs and leadership theory.

- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.

- A highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking skills.

- Proven ability to envision and implement innovative and agile programs and initiatives, especially in an online environment.

- Proven ability to organize events, lead promotion activities, and coordinate and support student support programs. Project management experience is an asset.

- Excellent communication, both verbal and written, in addition to interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate well in a cross-cultural environment.

- Ability to plan ahead, anticipate problems, and meet deadlines efficiently.

- Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member.

- Experience in designing and facilitating interactive and engaging training and developmental or skill-building workshops in-person and online across multiple digital platforms.

- Experience in evaluating projects and assessing learning is an asset.
