Job Summary
The Lab Analyst will play a key role in the SoilRes3 research lab environment at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. The Lab Analyst will conduct soil tests, analyses, measurements and perform field work, supporting analytical work in the lab utilizing complex procedures and analytical techniques and coordinating the use of lab’s instrument (mainly Flash Smart and TOC-L instruments, as well the use of ICP-OES and ICP-MS in collaboration with PCIGR lab).
Organizational Status
Under the supervision of Dr. Cornelis, the Lab Analyst will closely collaborate with the graduate students by assisting them with fieldwork and lab experiments.
Work Performed
Performing lab work, processes, and maintenance of equipment and instruments.
Provides training and instructions to graduate students on the use of TOC-L and FlashSmart instruments and microwave digestion system.
Ensuring the lab is stocked with necessary supplies while managing the inventory of lab materials.
Conducting analytical instrumentation with the Thermofisher FlashSmart elemental analyzer and Shimadzu TOC-L, including troubleshooting and basic maintenance.
Creating and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOP) for the lab.
Fielding requests from external parties.
Liaising with research partners.
Performing other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Lab Analyst performs complex technical tasks and develops new techniques/procedures in the lab, and requires good knowledge of the procedures in the SoilRes3 lab and in the Soil Science MSc and PhD Programs at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems.
Here are some examples of situations requiring the Lab Analyst to exercise judgement: problems with lab procedures for analyses using Flash Smart and TOC-L instruments, anticipate the need to reorder consumables, instrument troubleshooting, developing new techniques/procedures in the lab for analyzing for example sulfur with FlashSmart or developing soil extractions procedures, fielding questions from graduate students about where to find lab and field materials, scheduling issues with the use of instruments by the graduate students.
Dr. Cornelis is available 24/7 for providing guidance and advice when the Lab Analyst must exercise judgement.
Complex duties are carried out under the supervision of Dr. Cornelis. While tasks are assigned, the Lab Analyst plans and schedules their own work.
Supervision Received
The position is under the supervision of Dr. Cornelis, who provides detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter on new or unusual problems.
Supervision Given
The Lab Analyst will be directly involved in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference for a graduate degree in a relevant soil and environmental science discipline.
Knowledge requirements: soil science, environmental sciences, agriculture and land management.
Minimum 2 years of experience in analytical lab work.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
