Course Description/Relevant Employment Duties

 

This course represents the culminating design experience of the Mechanical Engineering program. Students undertake a substantial, open-ended mechanical engineering project that integrates and applies knowledge and skills developed throughout their undergraduate studies. Each project is completed under the supervision or co-supervision of a faculty member holding an appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, providing students with mentored, industry-relevant experience in managing a complex engineering challenge from concept through to a solution. The Sessional Instructor serves as the Course Coordinator, providing overall administrative and academic oversight of the course. This includes managing student project groups, coordinating and standardizing assessments across all supervised projects, and serving as the primary point of contact for students throughout the course. This courses spans terms 1 &2 and the sessional instructor must be available to support the course for the full year. 

 

Required Qualifications

  •  

    Active Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license in good standing with a Canadian provincial engineering association

  •  

    Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering

  •  

    Demonstrated breadth and depth of knowledge in core mechanical engineering principles, with particular expertise in engineering design

  •  

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to engage and support students in one-on-one and small group settings  

  •  

    Hands-on experience with machine shop equipment, including manual and/or CNC mills, lathes, and additive manufacturing processes

  •  

    Experience in industry practice or applied engineering design, with the ability to bridge academic and professional engineering contexts

  •  

    Previous teaching or instructional experience at the post-secondary level

  •  

    Familiarity with graduate attribute assessment frameworks and/or Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) accreditation requirements

*Supplemented Fees- 15.02(a) The employee may be eligible to receive supplemented fees in accordance with Schedule C of the Collective Agreement.  The actual rate of pay when in excess of the base rate of pay is deemed to include any supplemented fees owing, to the extent of the excess amount.  If the actual rate of pay is less than the sum of the base rate of pay and the supplemented fees owing, then the employee shall receive the difference.
