Course Description/Relevant Employment Duties 

 

ME 3E03 – Mechanical Engineering Design Theory is a 3-unit undergraduate course offered in the Fall term, delivered through three lectures and one tutorial per week. The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of elasticity-based stress distributions in loaded components, and develops their ability to analyze various three-dimensional stress states in isotropic, linearly elastic materials. Topics covered include 3-D stress transformation, a review of basic mechanics, curved beams, thick-walled pressure vessels, analysis and design of interference fits, rotating disks and rings, thermal stresses, eccentric column buckling, contact stresses, fatigue design and analysis, shaft design and analysis, and the design and analysis of bolted and welded joints. The course also emphasizes the broader context of machine design, and the critical role of safety in engineering design work.

 

Required Qualifications

 

Master’s degree or higher, in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. Applicants must have a demonstrated background and thorough understanding of the course topics listed above, as well as demonstrated expertise teaching undergraduate courses.  Professional Engineering registration is an asset.  Strong communication skills and an ability to work with students on a one on one basis are essential.

*Supplemented Fees- 15.02(a) The employee may be eligible to receive supplemented fees in accordance with Schedule C of the Collective Agreement.  The actual rate of pay when in excess of the base rate of pay is deemed to include any supplemented fees owing, to the extent of the excess amount.  If the actual rate of pay is less than the sum of the base rate of pay and the supplemented fees owing, then the employee shall receive the difference.
