Reporting to the Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) Supervisor, the Registered Practical Nurse Public Health provides immunization services to the community and schools as required.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides immunization services to schools and the community (e.g. Hepatitis B, influenza, HPV)
  • Reviews information records of children in child care centres and schools to determine immunization status and document information in the provincial Digital Health Immunization Repository (Panorama)
  • Liaises with school principals and child care centre operators to ensure that children have up-to- date immunization to prevent possible suspension from school or exclusion from childcare, to assist in the control of vaccine preventable disease outbreaks and to assist with the organization of immunization clinics
  • Acts as clinic lead for school and community immunization clinics
  • Provides immediate care/action in emergency situations. Assesses adverse events following vaccinations/medication administration and follows up with clients and health care providers
  • Inspects physicians' offices and other locations storing publicly funded vaccines to ensure proper storage and handling of vaccines
  • Investigates vaccine storage and handling incidents using relevant protocols, guidelines, vaccine stability information, policies, procedures and cold chain information systems
  • Maintains records
  • Collects, assesses and interprets immunization records to ensure compliance with the Immunization of School Pupils Act, Ontario Public Health Standards and other relevant legislation. Initiates action and completes follow up. Participates in school aged immunization clinics
  • Maintains immunization data in the provincial Digital Health Immunization Repository (Panorama). Compiles and updates school student immunization data from available sources (e.g. doctors, clinics, parents). Records data and verifies, corrects/reconciles data
  • Prepares immunization forms, suspension letters etc., to parents/guardians and school principals
  • Administers vaccines and other serum by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection
  • Attends working group meetings to plan public health immunization programs in schools and communities
  • Maintains statistical information

 

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Current registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario and in good standing.
  2. Diploma graduate of a recognized college or school of nursing or equivalent (i.e. certificate RPN with added courses in medication administration).
  3. Experience providing intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and/or vaccines to clients of all ages including infants, toddlers, children, youth, adults and seniors.
  4. Experience in conducting client assessment, health teaching to individuals or groups and counselling.
  5. Experience applying information contained within a medical directive.
  6. Experience using computer-based health information systems/databases.
  7. Experience in working with internal and external partners, build postive relationships in team environments and interprofessional collaboration.
  8. Valid and current CPR certificate.
  9. Possession of a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and daily access to a vehicle

 

You must also have:

  • Basic knowledge of immunology and vaccinology.
  • Ability to apply nursing practice in a community setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, community partners and other health professionals.
  • Willingness and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and accurate record keeping ability.
  • Demonstrated success working with priority populations, with the ability to create safe and inclusive environments
