Compensation Range

$5,365.42 - $7,709.92 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

There are 2 Project Manager positions available with this posting.


Based at The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) Project Manager will be responsible for providing leadership on implementing INMD Strategic Research priorities, under the supervision of the INMD Scientific Director and Associate Director as part of the INMD Team. The INMD Project Manager must have research scientific training, highly developed analytical skills, outstanding communication and computer skills, and have the ability to learn new skills and adapt to a fast-paced environment.

Organizational Status
This position will report to the Associate Director (AD) and works collaboratively as a key member of the INMD team that all report up to the Scientific Director (SD).

Work Performed

  • Supports all operations of the CIHR-Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes, including Institute Advisory Board meetings, as required, under the supervision of the INMD Scientific Director and Associate Director

  • Participates in planning CIHR multi-institute initiatives and activities by leading or taking part in working groups to contribute to the development of strategic initiatives and activities, such as knowledge mobilization workshops 

  • Supports the INMD Team in planning, organizing and carrying out national workshops and other events and activities involving various stakeholders to identify and refine strategic research priorities

  • Supports the INMD team in developing the Institute Research Priority Plan, and all process activities associated with its development

  • Arranges meetings and preparing meeting materials, as required

  • Develops briefing notes and slide decks for the Scientific Director, as required

  • Supports the Scientific Director and Associate Director in writing a business case to support the implementation of a strategic research priority

  • Liaises with decision makers and interest holders to develop partnerships that support strategic research priorities

  • Uses various data sources, data collection methods and funding analytics to analyze and report on relevant indicators to understand trends in funding and help CIHR-INMD demonstrate advances in achievement of its mandate (i.e., evaluating the impact of INMD-related research) 

  • Contributes to the INMD monthly newsletter content by writing short articles

  • Reviews CIHR grant applications for relevance to the INMD mandate areas and assist CIHR internal committees, as required

  • Prepares peer reviewed manuscripts to report on meetings and workshops, as required 

  • Examines and inquires into INMD-related research 

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Inappropriate decisions could damage the reputation of the Institute, CIHR central and the University of British Columbia as host institution of INMD, adversely affecting the ability of the Institute to fulfill its mandate.

This position will report to the AD, with direction from the Scientific Director. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of timelines and goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • A PhD level degree in science (PhD), or Master’s degree plus equivalent experience, in science relevant to INMD

  • Excellent ability to critically think through and analyze complex information, identify issues and formulate recommendations

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of decision makers, partners, and interest holders to strategically position INMD interests

  • High motivation to work in a team environment and take initiative, adaptability in small team environment

  • Ability to balance competing priorities and delegate if appropriate in what can periodically be a high stress environment

  • Ability to work independently

  • Experience in academic administration or a research funding organization

  • Leadership skills an asset

  • Bilingualism (English/French) an asset
