Position Title: Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing – Summer Student

The Program Support/Summer Student provides entry-level support to Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing (OHSW) programs and services while gaining structured exposure to workplace health, safety, and wellbeing practices at the Canadian Red Cross.

Working under close supervision, this role supports day-to-day program activities, contributes to defined tasks or short-term projects, and assists with information gathering, coordination, and documentation related to health, safety, and wellbeing initiatives. The position is developmental in nature, focused on learning, skill-building, and contributing to team efforts rather than providing independent advice or decision-making.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing program and service activities by assisting with clearly defined tasks and assignments under close supervision.

  • Participate in selected OHSW initiatives to gain exposure to workplace health and safety processes, prevention activities, and wellbeing programs.

  • Assist with preparing materials such as summaries, templates, trackers, presentations, or communication drafts related to OHSW programs, using provided guidelines and direction.

  • Collect, organize, and input OHSW-related information or data (e.g., training records, incident-related documentation, program participation data) in accordance with established procedures and privacy requirements.

  • Support basic information gathering or environmental scans related to health, safety, or wellbeing topics using defined sources, with findings reviewed by others.

  • Respond to routine inquiries by providing basic information or directing questions to appropriate OHSW team members.

  • Assist with coordination activities for OHSW meetings, training sessions, campaigns, or events (e.g., scheduling support, preparing materials, tracking attendance, follow-up tasks).

  • Collaborate with OHSW team members on assigned tasks and contribute to team initiatives through participation in meetings or working sessions.

  • Learn and follow established OHSW policies, processes, tools, and systems, and share observations or ideas with supervisors when invited.

 

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Completion of secondary school and/or enrollment in a post-secondary program (college or university), preferably in a related field such as health sciences, human resources, public health, or a similar discipline.

  • Relevant coursework, work experience or volunteer experience is an asset.

  • Basic proficiency with standard computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).

  • Ability to follow instructions, apply established procedures, and complete tasks with attention to detail.

  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and receive feedback in a supervised environment.

  • Clear communication skills for exchanging straightforward information in routine situations.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Ability to adapt to changes in work priorities and respond to time sensitive needs.

     

Work Environment

  • Work will be conducted in an office-like setting.

  • In a large-scale emergency, where staff numbers are compromised or additional resources are required provide disaster relief and/or emergency field operational support
