Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

Child Health Evaluative Sciences, SickKids Research Institute

Supervised by Dr. Peter Gill and Dr. Sanjay Mahant

We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to join a multidisciplinary research program focused on improving care and outcomes for hospitalized children through the Canadian Paediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN) (https://www.pirncanada.com/). This full-time position is based within Child Health Evaluative Sciences at the SickKids Research Institute and will be supervised by Dr. Peter Gill and Dr. Sanjay Mahant, paediatricians and scientists with a strong program of patient oriented research in paediatric hospital medicine (https://lab.research.sickkids.ca/mahant-gill/).

The successful candidate will play a leading role in advancing a portfolio of multi-centre prospective observational studies, along with other observational studies, systematic reviews, and grant development. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated post-doctoral fellow with strong skills in epidemiology, academic writing, and collaborative research to contribute to impactful child health research. Research training and career development will be available through the Research Training Centre at SickKids. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of extension to two years, and is intended as a full-time position.

Here's What You Get to Do

  • Lead and support the analysis and manuscript development for key multi-centre prospective observational studies focused on hospitalized children within PIRN.
  • Oversee study analysis activities, including secondary analysis protocol development, data quality assurance, and preparation of manuscripts, progress reports, abstracts, posters, and presentations.
  • Coordinate aspects of multi-centre study execution in accordance with regulatory and institutional guidelines, including study administration, remaining patient recruitment and data collection, and collaboration with participating study sites.
  • Work closely with Drs. Gill and Mahant on systematic reviews, retrospective and other observational studies, and the development of new study protocols.
  • Contribute to the development of grant applications, including preparing detailed grant outlines, drafting and revising content, and supporting submission to funding agencies.
  • Collaborate with methodologists, co-investigators, collaborators, patient partners, and knowledge users to inform study design and strengthen grant proposals.
  • Translate research findings into a range of knowledge products, such as infographics, abstracts, summaries, and materials for public and stakeholder engagement.
  • Support and help oversee students and trainees working in the lab.
  • Serve as a key point of communication across investigators, methodologists, collaborators, patient partners, and stakeholders to foster strong research relationships and project momentum.

Here's What You'll Need

  • A PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or a related field.
  • Strong training and working knowledge in epidemiologic methods and observational study design.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical research design and methodologies.
  • Experience with protocol development and grant writing.
  • Demonstrated strength in academic writing, including manuscripts, reports, and presentations.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in child health research.
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills, particularly in multi-site research environments.
  • Experience in knowledge translation is an asset.
  • The successful applicant will be encourage to apply for external funding support.

Employment Type: Full-time, 1-year contract with option for renewal for 1-2 years; modified benefits.
