Nurse Practitioner - Vascular Anomalies

This is a unique & exciting opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner to join an emerging area of paediatric care - the multidisciplinary (haematology, surgery, dermatology, radiology, genetics) management of individuals with vascular anomalies. This area of medicine is rapidly expanding due to discovery in the last decade of effective medical therapies and of the recognition that vascular anomalies result from genetic mutations in a variety of genes involved in blood vessel development and cell growth.

Until recently some patients with vascular anomalies (SickKids follows over 1000 such patients) would sometimes undergo a variety of radiological or surgical procedures, which sometimes helped, but ultimately did not cure these patients. Now most patients are being placed on medical therapies, and most are responding to these therapies.

If you are unfamiliar with this area of medicine, you are not alone! 

You should know that almost no one has training in this area of medicine. By taking on this position, you will join a growing multidisciplinary team of dedicated hematologists, surgeons, interventional radiologists, dermatologists, geneticists, as well as nurses and physiotherapists, who are all learning about how best to care for patients with vascular anomalies. There is expected to be a learning curve, and you will be well-supported by the multi-disciplinary team.

As a Nurse Practitioner in this blossoming area of medicine, you will have the opportunity to:

  • See patients collaboratively in a multitude of environments
  • Be responsible for the provision of comprehensive health care for children primarily in the ambulatory setting, including much needed clinical support for families with children with vascular anomalies
  • Integrate nursing medical skills and knowledge within a broad scope of advanced nursing practice.
  • Assume a leadership role in influencing integrated clinical practice and the provision and coordination of care to children with vascular anomalies
  • Foster partnerships with patients/families as well as interprofessional collaboration in the development and coordination of plans of care
  • Identify, integrate, and evaluate evidence-based innovations to enhance patient safety and improve patient care
  • Create, utilize and/or disseminate new knowledge using formal and informal approaches while building and sharing expertise medical therapies for vascular malformations/vascular tumours
  • Provide relevant health education to families that is based on their needs, learning styles and stage of development
  • Identify and link patients to support services and resources in the community

Who You Are

  • An innovative critical thinker with excellent communication & problem-solving skills
  • A collaborative team-player with the ability to build consensus amongst an interprofessional team & execute strategic priorities related to program development
  • Knowledgeable of theoretical and conceptual frameworks and their practical application
  • Proven ability to establish consultative relationships with inpatient, ambulatory, and community services
  • Interested in learning about vascular anomalies, a developing field of medicine,

Here's What You'll Need

Essential Requirements

  • Master of Nursing or equivalent, with a clinical focus
  • Completion of a Nurse Practitioner program (within MN or post-master certificate)
  • Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario within the RN (Extended Class)
  • 3 - 5 years of clinical nursing (RN) experience
     

Assets

  • Previous NP experience is a strong asset
  • Paediatric nursing experience is an asset but not required.

Employment Type

  • Full-Time (1.0 FTE), Temporary 14-month contract.
  • Includes access to extended health benefits, paid vacation & sick days 
  • Clinical responsibilities are typically scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with opportunities for hybrid or remote work.
