An opportunity exists in Stantec's St John's, NL office for a highly motivated Mechanical EIT to join our multidisciplinary team. In this role you will be responsible working with an engineer towards the design and execution of projects ranging in size and complexity, with a focus on municipal, federal, industrial, healthcare, commercial and educational projects. Stantec offers a flexible work environment where staff are equipped with the required hardware and software to effectively work remote from the office when required. A minimum office presence is expected to support project quality, collaboration, and learning.

As the successful candidate, your responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Work in a general capacity with technical knowledge of building science and building mechanical systems.
  • Develop system designs and select mechanical equipment for various types of buildings including hospitals, university buildings, sports facilities, industrial facilities, public infrastructure buildings, etc.
  • Prepare contract drawings, schematics, schedules, details, and sketches from conceptual design through to construction.
  • Prepare design reports and technical memos to support project deliverables
  • Carry out material take-offs and preparing opinions of probable construction costs
  • Work with a team to produce aspects of mechanical design and drawings in REVIT, as well as in AutoCAD.
  • Perform design load calculations and modelling, having major impact on design decisions related to building mechanical systems including HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection systems across Canada.
  • Review shop drawings and other contractor submittals for compliance with construction documents.
  • Perform field surveys for drawing and scope development, site reviews and as-built drawings.
  • Communicate with other team members and other engineering disciplines to complete projects
  • An extensive training and mentorship program is available
  • There is a great diversity of assigned work, including technical writing, modelling, optimization calculations, equipment selection, exposure to construction sites.
  • CAD/REVIT knowledge is good but not required; generally drafting is done by our Technologists, Engineering staff typically would only be providing technical reviews and markups of drawing sets.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word and Excel)
  • Effective communication skills are essential, including interpersonal and verbal abilities within a multi-discipline team environment.
  • Prior experience in the construction industry would be an asset. Knowledge or familiarity with National Building Codes, plumbing codes, fire codes, energy codes would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with LEED standards, ASHRAE, ASPE and NFPA would be considered an asset.
  • Self-motivated and self-starter with a strong work ethic.
  • Eager to learn with strong listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be well organized to be able to prioritize multiple tasks, work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Eligible for registration as an Engineer in Training
  • Interest/experience in HVAC design.
  • Interest/experience in the application of green engineering principles.
