Hybrid Job: This job offers the opportunity to work from home as part of a hybrid work arrangement. This arrangement will allow you to work some days at a TCHC work location and the rest of the time from home. The amount of time required to work at a TCHC work location is flexible, while considering operational and service delivery requirements.

We are searching for dedicated and passionate individuals to join our Health, Safety & Wellness team at Toronto Community Housing!
As a Health and Safety Consultant, you will use your expertise of health and safety management principles and best practices to drive organizational compliance and provide leadership, guidance, and support to divisional managers and supervisors concerning occupational health and safety ("OHS") in a manner that supports TCHC's tenant focused culture.
Reporting to the Manager of Health and Safety, you will develop and deliver health and safety policies, programs, and training to identify, assess, and control workplace hazards. Your efforts will ensure staff are engaged in physically and psychologically safe and healthy work supporting Toronto Community Housing's ambitious plan to improve the neighborhoods and lives of Toronto Community Housing tenants.
The Health & Safety Consultant will be responsible for ensuring organizational compliance with OHS legislation and regulations. The successful candidate will provide due diligence to Toronto Community Housing for the protection of employees from injury and the protection of the organization from work stoppages, charges and fines.
What you’ll do
Provide leadership, guidance and direction to human resources personnel and other staff on OHS matters
Develop, advise, and monitor compliance with corporate OHS policies, procedures, and safe work practices
Provide technical expertise for, and monitor compliance with, Toronto Community Housing's Asbestos Management Program
Develop OHS audit protocols for managers and Joint Health and Safety Committee (“JHSC”) members
Conduct workplace OHS audits and report findings and recommendations to senior management
Liaise with Ministry of Labour inspectors for investigations and to build support for OHS initiatives and programs
Monitor accident reporting and investigations by supervisors to verify accuracy, identify trends, and make appropriate recommendations or safety plans to prevent recurrencesMonitor OHS training compliance and develop and deliver an annual OHS training plan
Develop, deliver, and establish procurement requirements for OHS-related training
Provide leadership to Toronto Community Housing's Joint Health and Safety Committees supporting compliance with established terms of reference and the cooperative resolution of OHS concerns
Prepare and present quarterly performance reports and statistical reports, including analyzing and interpreting data to identify trends and make recommendations to improve health & safety performance, and reduce risk exposure and workers compensation costs
Liaise with the WSIB Consultant and the Rehabilitation/Ergonomics Consultant on any OHS matters
During the COVID-19 pandemic work from home will be available when not operationally required to attend TCHC worksites for investigations or assessments.
What you’ll need
A minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the health and safety field
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interpret relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and standards including but not limited to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Employment Standards Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Labour Relations Act, and Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act
Detailed technical knowledge in all aspects of health and safety risks and requirements, including OHS due diligence, asbestos management, contractor pre-qualification and safety, confined spaces, operation of garbage compactors, manual material handling, ergonomics, respiratory protection and WHMIS
Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
Working knowledge of disability/claims management and human resources information software is an asset
Experience working within a unionized setting and interpreting collective agreement language related to OHS matters is an asset
Experience working in a large corporate environment is an asset
Expert communication and interpersonal skills to deal with all levels of staff, managers, bargaining agent representatives and external stakeholders
Highly-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
Familiarity with the principles of alternate dispute resolution and ability to resolve conflicts between parties on OHS matters
