The Financial Systems Support (FSS) department provides functional production support and maintenance for the financial Mosaic (PeopleSoft) modules (Purchasing, Accounts Payable, Travel & Expense, Billing, Accounts Receivable, Bank Reconciliation, General Ledger, Commitment Control, E-procurement(MacBuy),Workflow and Project Costing). The department ensures the system is stable and that issues are corrected in a timely manner. The department is responsible for providing reconciliations and correction of data errors of sub modules and other systems (HR, Campus, Budgeting, Data Warehouse, Business Intelligence, other interfaces) to GL to ensure data integrity and reliability for both internal and external reporting. The department works in conjunction with UTS on issue resolution as well as regular system upgrades and system improvements. Financial report development, improvements and maintenance is also led by this department through the leadership of this position and in partnership with Institutional Research and Analysis (IRA).
This position reports to the Project Manager, Financial Reporting and Analysis within Financial Systems Support.
Job Summary:
The Financial Data & Reporting Analyst, reporting to the Project Manager, Financial Reporting and Analysis will perform a critical role in advancing the self-service reporting and analytics tools available to the broader Finance community at McMaster, including assessing and implementing new PeopleSoft, Oracle BI, or other analytics tools to deliver dashboards, reports and visualizations.
Working in collaboration with partners across the University such as Institutional Research and Analysis and University Technology Services, this position is a key resource in developing multiple concurrent, complex report development and improvement projects to meet aims of operational efficiencies and excellence around financial reporting.
The Analyst will be a key resource for stakeholders across the university by supporting operational business reporting needs using appropriate reporting tools as well as maintaining user training materials.
They will be a key champion for data governance, data management and data quality best practices, including supporting University-wide data governance initiatives.
Accountabilities:
- Develop Finance analytics and reporting capabilities, tools, and methodologies via various platforms (e.g.: PeopleSoft; Microsoft Excel and Power BI; Oracle BI) to address issues, requests and business requirements of end users
- Leverage available and emerging technologies, to provide enhanced self-service reporting to the broader Finance community by designing and implementing queries, reports, data visualizations, and dashboards, working collaboratively with financial reporting users, Institutional Research and Analysis (IRA) and University Technology Services (UTS).
- Perform complex data extraction (e.g.: queries and reports) from multiple data sources (e.g.: Mosaic Finance and Data Warehouse, Oracle BI, Jira, etc.), conduct data validation and cleansing, create analysis and visualizations to summarize data
- Collect and translate reporting and analysis requirements from financial system users and senior management for internal and external reporting needs through facilitation of in-depth interviews and requirement workshops, meetings, document analysis, surveys, business process descriptions, use cases, scenarios, business analysis, and task and workflow analysis
- Collaborate with the Institutional Research and Analysis team and actively participate in the development and implementation of reporting dashboards using the Business Intelligence tool
- Develop understanding of which business processes uses which data and what the data means in the context of specific processes in order to provide the appropriate sources of data to target data mappings for a proposed BI or other reporting project
- Create and maintain training and support materials for McMaster community self-service reporting tools (e.g.: PeopleSoft analytics tools, such as Kibana, simplified analytics, or pivot grids; reporting dashboards; Mosaic Reporting Hubs) in collaboration with various stakeholders’
- Create and maintain internal procedural documentation for Business Analysis/Reporting team
- Supports all phases of report development testing including, but not limited to, system, integration, acceptance, regression, and performance
- Support Financial Affairs business managers, Business Analysts and other stakeholders across the University by creating new queries and reports to support ongoing operational and regular business needs and cyclical activities
- Work with project leads and managers to critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources to distinguish user requests from the underlying true needs
- Work closely with the FSS and IRA teams to find the most efficient and expedient way to respond to and prioritize ad hoc data and information requests and analysis.
- Provide Level I and II support to users regarding functional issues with reports and translates issues into technical solutions.
- Assist with the resolution of problems in the test, production implementation, and post-implementation phases of reporting projects in coordination with other technical and business groups.
- Provide technical and general support and guidance on utilizing available data analysis tools and software to Financial Affairs team members and partners.
- Remain current with BI and Analytics technology, reporting tools, ERP software as well as industry best practices in order to recommend specific adoption
- Participates in data governance design and documentation activities, for example by identifying trusted data, writing data element definitions to build the data dictionary, and documenting specifications
- Identifies data quality issues, proposes solutions, and works in collaboration with business process owners to improve data quality.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field of study.
Experience:
- Requires 3 years of relevant experience preferably in higher education or a not-for-profit sector
- Finance/Accounting experience preferable
- Experience in, and awareness of Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing principles with understating of data modelling and data architectures
- Knowledge of reporting tools within PeopleSoft ERP system (e.g.: SQL, Query Manager; Simplified Analytics; Kibana Analytics) would be an asset
- Data literacy regarding data sources, data quality, definitions, analysis concepts, and visualizations
- Experience with Microsoft suite of offerings (e.g.: Office 365)
Knowledge/Skills:
- Experience with Oracle/PeopleSoft is preferred (in particular PeopleSoft Financial modules, nVision, OBIEE and OBIA with some understanding of data model and data architectures)
- Data literacy with an understanding of advanced data analytics and data management
- Ability to self-learn technologies
- Superior facility with data analysis tools such as Excel, Access, query tools
- Highly analytical and understands the basic principles of working with large and complex data sets
- Functional accounting knowledge and thorough knowledge of the University’s financial policies and procedures
