Job Summary
To provide athletic therapy services to assigned teams, contributing to the integrated health and performance care of UBC Athletes. The athletic therapist role is approximately 50% clinical and 50% on-field coverage. The clinical role involves assessing and treating injured athletes from UBC varsity sports using current athletic therapy practices.
Responsible for providing on-field first aid and athlete care in the daily training environment and games for select sports (i.e. football, rugby and hockey among others). Additional duties include but are not limited to collaborating with integrated support team staff (Strength and Conditioning, Dietetics, Medicine, Physiotherapy, Psychology), working with coaches and assisting in return to play decisions. The objectives are to provide opportunities for UBC Varsity athletes to develop to their fullest potential as student-athletes.
The shifts for this position will vary depending on varsity training and competition schedules. A flexible approach to work is required. Attendance is required at select varsity games (evenings and weekends) as well as, an ability to travel with teams when required.
Organizational Status
Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC student experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 125 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 60,000 students through recreational programming, 26 varsity teams, and 13 competitive clubs along with thousands of members of the UBC community.
Work Performed
Provide athletic therapy services for varsity athletes and work with therapy team to develop rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
Implementation of up-to-date injury assessment programs.
Provide on-field first aid for athletic injuries including injury assessment, basic emergency life support, and management of acute traumatic injuries.
Implement protocols for dealing with injured athletes during competition.
Assess and treat injuries and conditions, using contemporary rehabilitative techniques, therapeutic modalities, soft tissue mobilization, physical reconditioning, and supportive strapping procedures to promote an environment conducive to optimal healing in preparing student-athletes for safe return to competition.
Liaise as part of the therapy team including other UBC Athletic Therapists, external physiotherapists and varsity team doctors.
Liaise with Integrated support team staff to support a proactive health care model.
Assist Lead Athletic Therapist to ensure pre-season medical evaluation of varsity athletes are completed- Supporting student trainers for varsity teams.
Administering on-site medical and first aid coverage for varsity and special events.
Participate in Integrated Support Team meetings and initiatives.
Other duties may be substituted as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Consequences of error would include delay in athlete injury management and ability to return to competition and thus potential impacts upon personal health of that athlete, team performance, increased physiotherapy costs and increased costs in medical supplies.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Lead Athletic Therapist, and is ultimately responsible to the Sr. Manager, Sport Science and Sport Medicine and the Director of Athletics, Operations and Team Services.
Supervision Given
Leadership and mentorship of student-trainers, support select student led directed studies.
Minimum Qualifications
CATA certified; Advanced First Aid Training, AED and CPR Certification, personal malpractice insurance.

Preferred Qualifications
Extensive experience in care and prevention of athletic injuries including experience working with elite level athletes in a team environment.
Positive attitude, strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment, get along and work well with members of the department, supervisors and other employees of the university.
Flexible approach to work; Attendance at select varsity games required evenings and weekends.
Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector Check.
Athletic background or high performance history an asset.
Strength and Conditioning experience and certifications are an asset.
Experience in an integrated health care team is an asset.
