Assistant Professor (Contractually Limited Appointment)

 

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University invites applications for a one-year (non-renewable) contractually limited position to begin July 1, 2026, at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek applicants qualified to teach introductory courses in bioethics and ethics, as well as more advanced courses in value theory, broadly construed. Ability to teach one or more of the following upper-level courses would be desirable: Advanced Ethics; Global Health Ethics; Human Rights and Global Justice; Feminist Philosophy. The successful applicant will teach 21 units (7 courses) in total, including three courses each in the Fall and Winter and one in the Spring.

 

The successful candidate will have a PhD, typically in Philosophy, either in hand or near completion by the starting date; previous university-level teaching experience; and demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses in philosophy.

The starting salary will not be less than $94,167 and will be determined based on rank, discipline, experience, and qualifications. Average salaries by rank and Faculty for previous academic years can be found here.

Application packages should include: (i) a letter of interest, (ii) a curriculum vitae, (iii) a brief teaching dossier, (iv) as for all McMaster searches, a brief (one-page) statement describing any contributions made or planned in relation to advancing equity, diversity and inclusive excellence in teaching, research, or service within higher education, community-based, or other professional settings, and (v) names and contact information for two referees. No letters of recommendation are required at time of application – these will be solicited at a later stage of the search process.

 

 

 

The teaching dossier should include: (a) a statement of teaching philosophy and practice (max. 2 pages), and (b) outlines for two undergraduate philosophy courses, either previously taught or proposed, ideally in the broad areas of this search.
