Job Summary

The ACARN Communications Assistant promotes programs, events, and research related to the BC Agricultural Climate Action Research Network (ACARN).

ACARN is a network that fosters collaboration among researchers, government, and producers in order to catalyze effective, research-backed climate solutions for BC food producers. ACARN also delivers the BC FoodWeb, a multi-institutional knowledge mobilization portal designed to increase access to food systems research results and other resources for food producers, processors, policymakers, educators, and the public.

The ACARN Communications Assistant plays an important role in contributing to the implementation of communications plans for ACARN. Duties include creating compelling content for websites, social media, and print materials, supporting knowledge mobilization to producers, and organizing events in collaboration with the ACARN team.

Organizational Status


This position reports to the ACARN Network Manager (a UBC staff position) and will also interacts and collaborates with the Climate Change & Environment Research Assistant at ACARN.

Work Performed

  • Raises awareness of ACARN by planning and implementing communications campaigns

  • Formats and designs knowledge translation products such as research briefs, fact sheets

  • Creates and edits digital content, including short‑form videos, graphics, and written posts.

  • Creates clear and compelling content to promote events such as public workshops, academic activities, and special projects.

  • Supports delivery of ACARN events

  • Oversees the production of newsletters.

  • Supports distribution of content through appropriate communications channels (website, e-news, social media, and print).

  • Ensures campaign materials align with branding guidelines.

  • Uses analytics to make recommendations for future campaigns, and assists in the physical and digital distribution of campaigns and materials to target audiences.

  • Maintaining and updating the ACARN and BC FoodWeb websites using WordPress and Drupal, including posting news items, events, and resources under guidance.

  • Contributes to annual progress reports evaluating the reach and effectiveness of communications and knowledge products.

  • Contributes to grant and funding proposals

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position requires the exercise of sound judgment in conducting research, analysis, and event coordination to ensure accuracy, attention to detail, and adherence to established timelines. The role does not carry responsibility for budgetary decision‑making or final approval of documents.

Work is performed under the general direction of the ACARN Network Manager, who provides oversight and guidance. Errors in judgment, analysis, written materials, or event delivery may negatively impact the quality and timeliness of project outcomes. Such errors could adversely affect stakeholder confidence, hinder program objectives, and reduce the likelihood of securing future funding opportunities.

Supervision Received


Reports to the BC Agricultural Climate Action Research Network Manager.

Supervision Given


Assists in the guidance of Work Learn students throughout the year.

Minimum Qualifications


High School graduation, plus two years of post-secondary education, plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

A post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant discipline such as communications, journalism, marketing, environmental science, agriculture or food systems is preferred.

One year of experience in public relations/marketing, knowledge translation, graphic design, or project management is preferred.

Experience with digital communications and marketing platforms, including coordinating promotional campaigns is preferred.

Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including preparing reports, articles and promotional content for a variety of audiences.

  • Strong writing and editing skills required to translate technical, research-based documents into plain language for a general audience.

  • Strong video and/or audio editing skills are required.

  • Computer experience at an advanced level is required (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel) with knowledge of Canva, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to receive and give feedback, ask questions, and develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.

  • Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous manner with an equity lens and an appreciation of different life experiences.

  • Ability to be open-minded, demonstrate good judgment, approach work with energy, exercise a creative approach, and be willing to suggest and test new ideas.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative, dynamic, and creative team environment.

  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail, especially in proofreading and copyediting.

  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to oversee the work of students effectively.
